This page is a collection of fandom terminology from the Minecraft fandom and related fandoms such as MCYT.

General terminology

  • Bedwars: A team PvP game best known as a minigame on Hypixel, where the goal is to destroy other teams' beds while protecting your own.
  • Blitz: Shorthand for Blitz Survival Games, a version of Survival Games playable on Hypixel. Also the name of a Minecraft parody of Blank Space by Taylor Swift about the minigame, created by Technoblade.
  • Block People: A slang term used primarily in MCYT fandom to refer to Minecraft avatars.
  • Bridging: Crouching to build a bridge under yourself to cross a gap in terrain. "Speedbridging" refers to doing this very quickly.
  • Budder: Slang for gold ingots, coming from SkyDoesMinecraft. Rarely used in modern Minecraft fandom due to Sky's allegations.
  • Crafter: Slang for a fan of Minecraft.
  • Cubetober: An October prompt challenge for Minecraft.
  • Cubitos: A Spanish MCYT slang term that refers to Minecraft avatars, literally translated as "little cubes". More accurately used as the Spanish equivalent to the English MCYT slang "block people". Seems to originate in the Karmaland fandom, and has spread to other SMP fandoms from the crossover brought on by Squid Craft and QSMP.
  • Dadbrine: Also known as "Herobrine's Son" or other terms, a fanfiction trope typically featuring an original character as the child of Herobrine.
  • Destroy the Godmodder: A forum roleplay game that started on Minecraft forums and later spread to other forums in the early 2010s.
  • Elytra Beetles: A popular headcanon that suggests that the in-game elytra item is actually the shell of the wings of a bug.
  • End Poem: A poem displayed in the game's ending credits, most recognizable for the line "And the universe said I love you, because you are love". The author of the poem officially announced it was now public domain in 2022.
  • Endbusting: The act of raiding an End City for rare items like shulker shells and elytra.
  • Entity 303: A popular Minecraft creepypasta character similar to Herobrine.
  • Essempi: Sometimes also spelled Essempee or Essempy. A phonetic spelling of SMP, typically used to refer to them as a more realistic location in fanfiction. May have roots in SMPLive, which has a location called Essempe Park.
  • Gameknight999: A series of published fanmade novels based on Minecraft.
  • Genderman: Slang used either to refer to Ranboo or Endermen in general. Meant to convey that the user has gender envy for them.
  • God Apple: An enchanted golden apple, also sometimes called a Notch Apple.
  • Hatsune Miku Created Minecraft: A snarky way of discrediting Notch, the creator of Minecraft, who has some controversial right-wing beliefs. Later spread to other problematic media such as Harry Potter and was criticised as a result, as people thought dismissing the way a creator's bigotry can seep into their work by just saying Hatsune Miku made it was unhelpful and dismissive. Sometimes also "Philza created Minecraft".
  • Herobrine: The most popular Minecraft creepypasta, a version of Steve with white eyes that would allegedly haunt players' worlds. Some versions of the story describe him as the dead brother of Notch. For a long time it was a running gag with the developers to list "Removed Herobrine" in every update's patch notes.
  • Herosteve: The popular ship between Herobrine and Steve, the game's player character.
  • MCSM: Minecraft: Story Mode, a spin-off game created by Telltale Games.
  • Mineblr: The Tumblr fandom for the game itself.
  • Minecon: A convention for Minecraft that was hosted in real life until 2016, then becoming the livestreamed Minecraft Earth in 2017, Minecon Live in 2019, and finally Minecraft Live in 2020. The Mob Vote takes place here.
  • Minecraft Dungeons: A dungeon crawler spin-off game created by Mojang.
  • Minecraft Earth: A mobile Pokemon GO style spin-off game that is now discontinued. May also refer to the livestreamed Minecon events from 2017 to 2018.
  • Minecraft IRL: A trope in fanfiction and common tag on AO3 that typically refers to Minecraft being reality for the fic's characters. An early precursor for indicating non-RPF in MCYT fandoms, predating the c! prefix for characters.
  • Minecraftia: A common fan term for the Minecraft world. More common in older fandoms such as Team Crafted.
  • Minesona: A slang term for any Minecraft non-canon character. Most commonly used to refer to one's Minecraft OC, or to refer to the characters streamers play in Minecraft content.
  • MLG: To save yourself from fall damage using a water bucket. Also referred to as a "water bucket clutch".
  • Mob Farm: A build, sometimes using redstone, meant to allow the user to passively collect drops from mobs.
  • Mob Vote: An event hosted by Mojang during the livestreamed Minecraft events where players vote between three mobs for which they want to see added to the game.
  • Mobfucking: Monsterfucking for Minecraft mobs - sexual attraction to mobs, typically referring to hostile mobs, as well as sexually explicit content of Minecraft mobs.
  • Noxcrew: A group of Minecraft creators who have been organizing events and creating maps and other downloadable content for the game for the past decade.
  • Origins: Ambiguous term - can refer to Origins, the Minecraft mod, the Origins SMP that uses the mod, or OriginsMCRP, a group of Minecraft roleplay creators who have made multiple scripted series on YouTube.
  • PvP: Player vs Player, referring to in-game combat as well as minigames.
  • Revenge: The most popular Minecraft parody, a parody of DJ Got Us Falling In Love Again by Usher. It was created by TryHardNinja and CaptainSparklez, and is most recognizable for the first line - "Creeper, aw man."
  • Shulker Box Fic: A fanfic that is 1,728 words long (the number of items that can be held in a shulker box) and mirrors the beginning and ending.
  • Skyblock: A style of Minecraft map where players are placed on a floating island with limited resources.
  • SkyWars: A PvP minigame where players spawn on floating islands and must fight each other.
  • SMP: Survival Multiplayer, referring to a type of Minecraft server that places multiple players in a survival world. More often used to refer to a genre of often improvised roleplay content on YouTube and Twitch, re-popularized by SMPLive in 2019.
  • Standard Galactic: An alphabet created for the video game Commander Keen, also used as the enchanting table runes in Minecraft.
  • Survival Games: A PvP minigame initially called Hunger Games, which puts a bunch of players in an arena with chests around the map and makes them fight to survive.
  • Terra Swoop Force: A well-known map created by Noxcrew available on the Minecraft Marketplace. Was later implemented into the minigame TGTTOSAWAF in Minecraft Championships.
  • The Aether: A rumored dimension that mirrors the Nether, with a portal created by pouring water in a glowstone frame. Never added to the base game, but has been modded in by fans.
  • The Crafting Dead: Can refer to a mod or a roleplay series based on The Walking Dead.
  • The Farlands: A glitch in beta versions of Minecraft that causes distorted land to generate if you go far enough away from spawn.
  • Trading Hall: A player-built room filled with villagers for trading.
  • UHC: Ultra Hardcore, a popular Minecraft minigame. Similar to Hardcore mode, but in addition the player cannot naturally regenerate health, instead needing golden apples or potions. The minigame was originally created by Mindcrack members Guude, Docm77, VintageBeef, and W92Baj.
  • Vex Magic: A trope in Minecraft fanfiction that originated from the Hermitcraft fandom, involving any kind of magic related to the Vex mob.
  • Wither Sickness: A concept that originated from Minecraft: Story Mode and has been used as a trope in all sorts of Minecraft fanfiction - a fictional illness based on the in-game Wither effect.
  • /top: A command to teleport yourself to the top of wherever you are. A common meme within Minecraft events as it references a glitch from Minecraft Mondays where loot spawned super high up on the map and players used /top to collect it.

MCYT terminology

  • A Tribute to Minecraft: A video dedicated to the game, created by Jschlatt. The opening monologue is often quoted or used as a copypasta.
  • Blood for the Blood God: A phrase that originates from Warhammer but is closely associated with Technoblade and his fans.
  • Blue Sonder: A very popular Dream SMP fantasy AU.
  • c!: A prefix used to specify referring to a fictional roleplay character that a streamer plays, rather than the real person.
  • Canon Lives: A system of tracking canonical player deaths in Dream SMP, first a fan theory and then canonized. Players have three canon lives that they can lose during important lore events.
  • ComeBlockHome: A reunion event for people who were involved in the early 2010s MCYT scene, that took place in 2021.
  • Crazy Craft 3.0: A Minecraft roleplay server using the Crazy Craft 3.0 modpack.
  • Daemos: A fictional demon species from the My Inner Demons series created by Aphmau.
  • Demise: A last-man-standing event created by Grian in season six of Hermitcraft, costing 50 diamonds for players to enter. Upon death, participants would change their skins to be achromatic or dead, and must try to kill other players through non-PVP means, such as traps. The last player standing would win all of the signup diamonds.
  • Dream SMP: A popular semi-scripted roleplay SMP created by Dream in 2020, the most popular SMP to date.
  • Dreamons: A fictional species from Dream SMP.
  • Drunk Minecraft: A Let's Play series by Markiplier where, like the title suggests, he plays while drunk.
  • Empires SMP: A roleplay SMP created by fWhip that takes a fantasy approach to its world. Even has its own musical version.
  • Enderspeak: An "enderman language" created by Ranboo for the Dream SMP.
  • Ethopedia: A search engine built specifically for EthosLab's channel by u/captchafree on Reddit.
  • FTO: Fairy Tail Origins, an OriginsMCRP roleplay series based on Fairy Tail.
  • HBG: House Builder Gang, a group of popular Minecraft speedrunners.
  • Hermitblr Demise: A fandom event within the Tumblr fandom for Hermitcraft where people create content for characters that other people suggest, typically Minecraft OCs. The concept derives from the Demise event on season six of Hermitcraft.
  • Hermitcraft: A long-running Minecraft SMP, started in 2012. Both the fanbase and playerbase skews older than other SMPs tend to.
  • Karmaland: A long-running Spanish Minecraft SMP. Gained new interest from non-native speakers with Karmaland V, when Quackity was invited to the server.
  • Kingdomcraft: A factions minecraft server created by LDShadowLady.
  • KOV: Kingdom of Valor, a roleplay series created by Samgladiator.
  • Life SMP Series: A series of semi-hardcore SMPs created by Grian, starting with 3rd Life SMP.
  • Lords of Minecraft: An older Minecraft series associated with Buffalo Wizards and Mindcrack.
  • MCD: Minecraft Diaries, a roleplay series created by Aphmau.
  • MCRP: A subcategory of MCYT that encompasses FPF fandoms based on Minecraft roleplay, such as Dream SMP, Hermitcraft, and Mianite, among many others.
  • MCSR: A subcategory of MCYT, referring to Minecraft speedrunning.
  • MCYT: An umbrella term for all RPF and FPF fandoms involving Minecraft YouTube, Twitch and other online video content.
  • MCYTober: An October prompt challenge for the MCYT fandom that has been running since 2020.
  • MHO: My Hero Origins, an OriginsMCRP roleplay series based on My Hero Academia.
  • Mianite: A Minecraft roleplay series created by CaptainSparklez in 2014.
  • Mindcrack: A group of content creators who initially gained popularity for their Minecraft content.
  • Minecraft But: A genre of Minecraft video content focusing on beating the game with a self-imposed challenge, usually a bizarre and specific mod. Popularized with Wilbur Soot and Jschlatt's lava and water rising videos.
  • Minecraft Championships: A monthly Minecraft tournament organized by Noxcrew and Smajor1995, the most successful of its kind.
  • Minecraft Manhunt: A series of videos created by Dream where he has to try to beat the game as fast as possible while his friends try to hunt him down. The concept was initially conceived by Wilbur Soot in a one-off challenge video.
  • Minecraft Mondays: A tournament series created by Keemstar in 2019 that helped boost Minecraft’s re-popularization in online video content before a horrific downfall plagued by internal drama and hacking.
  • Mod Quest: A roleplay series created by LDShadowLady. The series had 5 episodes and ran from August 20th 2016 to November 6th 2016.
  • My Inner Demons: A roleplay series created by Aphmau, completely unrelated to MCD.
  • MyStreet: A spin-off series of the Minecraft Diaries series by Aphmau that is set in an alternate universe.
  • Nightmare SMP: A popular "opposite" DSMP AU with characters like Nightmare, GoodBoyHalo and GeorgeWasFound.
  • Noxcrew Gameshow: A tournament series in the 2010s that served as the precursor to MCC.
  • OoO: Origins of Olympus, an OriginsMCRP roleplay series.
  • One Life: A series of Minecraft servers created by Yammy_xox where everyone played Minecraft on Hardcore mode, having only one life. The most recent server was in 2018.
  • PDH: Phoenix Drop High, a spin-off of MyStreet by Aphmau set in a high school.
  • Penis SMP: A fake SMP that came from a parody post mocking MCYT fans on Tumblr, analogous to Goncharov.
  • Philza Hardcore: A hardcore singleplayer series created by the YouTuber Philza, that he has had on-going for many years over multiple seasons.
  • Pixel Pact: A group of female minecraft players. Members included Ldshadowlady, Yammy_xox, Nyanstrike, Vengelfe and MittyMoxx. The group appears to have ended in 2015.
  • Potato War: An event on Hypixel Skyblock in 2019, where im a squid kid and Technoblade competed to farm the most potatoes.
  • QSMP: A roleplay SMP created by Quackity in 2023, the first mainstream livestreamed multilingual SMP. Also known as Quackity SMP or Quesadilla SMP.
  • Shadowcraft: A singleplayer Minecraft series created by LDShadowLady that ran from August 24th 2013 to October 11th 2014. Had a sequel, Shadowcraft 2.0, in 2016.
  • SMPEarth: A factions roleplay SMP created by Wilbur Soot, fractalcounty and JoshA20 in late 2019 that takes place on a scale recreation of the Earth in Minecraft.
  • SMPLive: A comedy SMP created by CallMeCarson and cscoop in early 2019 that repopularized SMPs as a genre of content on video sites. Players must have been livestreaming if they were online.
  • Squid Craft: A Spanish Minecraft event based on Squid Game, that later allowed English players in the second event.
  • Stampy's Lovely World: A long-running series of Minecraft videos by the YouTuber stampylongnose.
  • Team Crafted: A group of popular Minecraft YouTubers in the early 2010s, including SkyDoesMinecraft and BajanCanadian among others.
  • Watchers: An unseen force from Evolution SMP, often used in fanfiction as a species for characters like Grian.
  • Yandere High School: A Minecraft roleplay created in 2015 by Samgladiator, with multiple different series. May also refer to another series created by ItsFunneh and the KREW.
  • Yogscast: A group of content creators that became well known in the early 2010s for their Minecraft Let's Plays.

Server-related terminology

  • 2b2t: A public Minecraft anarchy server, the oldest of its kind. The name is short for 2 Builders 2 Tools.
  • Hypixel: A public Minecraft server, one of the most popular. Focuses on various minigames.
  • Hypixel Skyblock: A MMORPG minigame on Hypixel with surprisingly in-depth mechanics and lore. Popular YouTubers who have made content on Hypixel Skyblock include Technoblade, TommyInnit and TimeDeo.
  • Hytale: A Minecraft inspired game developed by Hypixel Studios.
  • MassiveCraft: A public Minecraft roleplay server focusing on the factions style of gameplay.
  • TubNet: A public Minecraft server created by Tubbo.
  • Wynncraft: A public Minecraft MMORPG server. Founded by Grian, Salted and Jumla.

Modding terminology

  • All The Mods: A popular "kitchen sink" Minecraft modpack with 8 different versions over the years.
  • Create: A popular technology mod for Minecraft used in several SMPs, including Cogchamp SMP and a SMP created by Hermitcraft members.
  • CurseForge: A website that hosts Minecraft mods, as well as a downloadable mod manager and launcher.
  • Elytrians: A race of winged players from the Origins mod.
  • Fabric: A newer mod loader for Minecraft. Tends to be more used for newer Minecraft versions.
  • Forge: A mod loader for Minecraft, the older and more established of the two most commonly used ones.
  • FTB: Feed the Beast, a Minecraft modpack. Also used to refer to modded Minecraft in general.
  • Hexxit: A modpack described as being "in the style of old Dungeons & Dragons campaigns".
  • Mob Talker: An old Minecraft mod that turns mobs into anime-style monster girls that can be talked to using an item. The most popular character from the mod is Cupa the Creeper.
  • OptiFine: An optimization mod for Minecraft used to make the game run more smoothly and look better.
  • Pam's Harvestcraft: A popular mod that adds new food and crops.
  • Quark: A Minecraft mod that tries to enhance the base game by adding many little features.
  • Redstone Flux: A type of energy used in some older tech mods.
  • RLCraft: A popular Minecraft modpack that is known for being notoriously difficult.
  • Sky Factory: A modpack based on Skyblock, with tech mods.
  • Stoneblock: A modpack based on Skyblock, that instead surrounds the player in stone.
  • Technic Launcher: A Minecraft modpack launcher, one of the oldest to exist.
  • Tekkit: One of the oldest and most popular Minecraft modpacks, primarily focusing on technology.
  • The Twilight Forest: A popular Minecraft mod that adds a new fantasy dimension to the game.
  • Valhelsia: A series of Minecraft modpacks themed around expanding the world generation and appealing to a wide group of the playerbase.
  • Voltz: One of the older modpacks that has been used by multiple groups of content creators such as the Yogscast and people like CaptainSparklez, Tubbo and Ranboo for their Voltz Wars series.
