Squid Game was released worldwide on September 17, 2021, and became Netflix's most-watched series of all time. It became popular in fannish spaces both in itself and as an AU for other ships. Within a month, over 1,000 works had been posted under the Squid Game tag on Archive of Our Own.
The use of the Squid Game setting in AUs has been criticized as devaluing the show's anti-capitalist messaging. The concept of Capitalist Realism has been used to describe the way in which both the media and fandom have capitalised on the success of the show.
In November of the same year, the YouTuber MrBeast released a video titled $456,000 Squid Game In Real Life! in which he recreated a real life Squid Game. The comments on his video suggest his fans were largely impressed, but the response from outside of his circle was much more critical, with much ridicule had about the irony of a white rich American giving random less wealthy people money for competing in the games when the show itself is a direct criticism of this.
The first season of Squid Game went through a sudden and intense surge in popularity. The series premiered three days before the opening of the nominations for the Yuletide exchange, and by the time sign-ups closed, it had surpassed 1,000 completed works in English on AO3. Its popularity declined just as quick as it rose, and the number of stories stabilized at around 2,100 by January 2022. Between that time and the release of the second season in December 2024, approximately 400 additional stories were posted. Following the release of the second season, the series regained popularity and the number of works increased quicker.

Piracy
A notable exception to the claims of a worldwide release is China,
Squid Game, the global hit show centred on deadly children's games, has become hugely popular in China even though it is not officially released there. Netflix is not available in China and many people have been watching the show on illegal streaming sites or by downloading torrents.[1]
