Skeppy (real name Zak Ahmed) is a POC MCYTer known for his trolls, PVP,[1] and event videos such as his series "Trapping 100 Kids". He's made well over a thousand Youtube videos and has over six million subscribers on his main channel. He is known for being dedicated and hard working, and there was a time where he used to upload multiple videos a day. More recently, he takes regular hiatuses before coming back with daily uploads for a time. He used to stream earlier in his career but rarely does so anymore.

In his videos he comes across as an excitable and loud personality, tending to shout and laugh uproariously. However in groups, he is usually much quieter. In real life group meetups he seems more subdued than in his videos, tending to only venture on camera when specifically called for, or when following BadBoyHalo. When he gets flustered or blushes, he tends to cover his face with his hands. Sometimes he physically leaves when he gets embarrassed. He is also extremely quiet when he's focused, such as when playing MCC.

Skeppy was born January 17, 2000 in Columbus, Ohio, in the United States. He's lived mostly in Florida, but also spent part of his childhood in Dubai and Toronto, Canada. As an adult he's also lived in Texas and Los Angeles, California where he lived with his friends TapL and Spifey. Outside of Youtube he used to have a merch company and has mentioned doing real estate, and ended up not going to college after graduating high school.

He came up with his username from SkepticalPvP, explaining that top Minecraft PvPers would have PvP at the end of their names, but he was skeptical of how good they really were. People would shorten it to Skep, and he eventually changed it to Skeppy. His Minecraft skin is the diamond block texture with what's known as a "derp face". After Technoblade's death a crown was added to his skin.

He often collaborates with other content creators, most notably with his best friend BadBoyHalo, usually trolling videos or playing together in Minecraft mini games (commonly Hypixel Bedwars). Fans shipping them together, either platonically or romantically, is Skeppy's most popular ship (see Skephalo).

He also has popular videos with Technoblade, who he competed with for subs when Techno was alive. Skeppy said he met Techno simply by spamming in Techno's chat to join him, and would purposefully try to betray and kill Techno (but was never really successful at preventing Techno from winning whatever minigame they were playing). In one famous video where Techno outsmarted a trolling Skeppy, Techno famously taunted Skeppy that, 'if you wish to defeat me, train for another thousand years', which has become a bit of a meme quote.[2] Techno also reportedly said that Skeppy had cracked the code (to the Youtube algorithm) and Techno's dad said he heard Skeppy's name so often he felt like he already knew him. After Techno's death, Skeppy met and collaborated with Techno's dad on several videos and was selected by Techno's dad to present an award in honor of Technoblade from the Sarcoma Foundation.

He has played on the Dream SMP and other multiplayer servers, including his own SMPs with his group of friends called the iDots and ChadSMP, and won Minecraft competitions like Minecraft Monday[1] and MCC[2]. He also formed part of The Trio.

His character technically exists in the QSMP as well, although Skeppy never actually played on the server, thanks to BadBoyHalo frequently referencing him, building statues of him, and calling him while streaming to talk to the egg children. He was considered Dapper's other parent (with BadBoyHalo being Dapper's primary parent).

Fandom

Skeppy owns the public Minecraft server InvadedLands[3] where fans can sometimes play in events hosted by him or end up being victim to a troll (or just play Minecraft).

His twitter fanbase is called diamondtwt (as Skeppy's minecraft skin is a diamond block, thus diamonds feature heavily in his branding). The twitter fandom can sometimes be clique heavy and judgmental. But like their creator they are mostly teasing and fun going, celebrating and mourning the loss of their streamer and tend to feel on the younger side of demographics.

Occasionally Skeppy has been known to like or even reply to fanworks. His direct interactions with fan content includes a video where he googled himself, which included reading a wiki page, looking at fanart and trying to read fanfic.[3] He's also watched[4] and commented positively under fanvids.[5]

Skeppy seems to try to keep in touch with his fanbase but he's grown more aloof as he's aged and streamed less. However his rare social media posts and streams are often celebrated and shared by a dedicated fanbase. His fans like to playfully tease Skeppy on his posts, such as jokingly calling him a 'bendy ruler' after Skeppy tweeted that he was "as straight as a ruler".

He also has regulars who show up in his event videos, reportedly waiting hours for the chance to participate, a fact that was demonstrated in one event video where last one to leave the server won (without Skeppy directly telling them that was the win condition, of course).[6]

As someone who’s been in dozens of skeppy events over the last few years, I can confirm that skeppy does NOT care for his viewers time, he hosts out of the blue when he feels like it. Could be 2 AM even for HIM, could be noon! His more recent events have been at more relatable times, but the majority that I’ve participated in weren’t. Did I mention that he used to host only once a week? Or once every 2 or three? he also wouldn’t give us a heads up, so some skeppy addicts (like me) would spend dozens of hours waiting.. when we have to go to sleep, and bam, skeppy hosts. Ty for letting me vent my years of anguish!

@Skeeppppy [7]

There are many videos from participants in his events on Youtube.[8] His event subfandom has a discord where they send alerts of when he might possibly be hosting. They even managed to snag the vanity discord url discord.gg/skeppy

Skeppy also sometimes goes to conventions such as Vidcon and has occasionally participated in panels and signings.

Skeppy is sometimes credited with the 2019 resurgence in popularity of Minecraft.

Deleted Videos & Streams

Fans sometimes preserve deleted streams and videos, however it is usually considered somewhat controversial to share them under the assumption that Skeppy deleted them "for a reason". Though a reason is rarely actually given. There is really only one stream where Skeppy's mods actually asked people not to share it, and that was his 21st birthday stream as Skeppy got drunk during it, however it's still reuploaded in it's entirety on Youtube anyway.

Friendships

Skeppy regularly comes under fire for continuing to be friends with or featuring creators in his videos who have fallen out of public favor, such as Sapnap or a6d.

I think ppl forget that skeppy is a good person but he just doesn't show it as often as others and so kudos to him and the whole MC community and everyone who supports 💕
Shipping

He's often shipped with his best friend BadBoyHalo (see BadBoyHalo & Skeppy). Skeppy's mentioned he regretted saying some of the things that encouraged the shipping, which temporarily killed the romantic shipping of them in 2020, but seems to tolerate his fans and friends doing it without much further comment nowadays. He even sometimes includes jokes in his videos in reference to the ship.

Jokes

Skeppy apologized for inadvertently joking about domestic violence (having a video titled "Beating a Girl in Bedwars" which he also tweeted out) and consequently donated video proceeds to a domestic abuse charity.[10]

There is another joke from 2020 he has yet to delete that people who want to find fault with him continue to criticize him for:

call my girl playstation cause shes almost 5

QSMP Addition

Many in the QSMP fandom didn't even realize Skeppy was a real person at first and not simply a made up character that BadBoyHalo created. Skeppy was resented by many in the fandom, and on the QSMP, who wanted to ship BadBoyHalo with other creators, viewing Skeppy (even though he wasn't even on the server) as merely an obstacle to their ships. Skeppy's fanbase begged the larger QSMP fanbases not to dismiss Skeppy out of hand or hate on him without even giving him a chance. It somewhat splintered his and Bad's joint fanbase as new BadBoyHalo fans had little idea who Skeppy actually was, and Skeppy fans became even more concerned at Skeppy being reduced to only his relation with BadBoyHalo instead of being treated as an actual independent person.

The animosity came to a head around the QSMP elections, as whoever became president would be allowed to add a new creator, and it was well known that BadBoyHalo, who was in the running for president, would almost certainly invite Skeppy. Adding fuel to the shipper fire, BadBoyHalo's main competition for president argued during the debates that adding Skeppy would be selfish and wrong, which encouraged their fanbase to try to dig up dirt on Skeppy to justify their content creator's attack, and leading to them harassing Skeppy and his fans. Skeppy fans accused others of being racist in their complaints about Skeppy, for insisting on holding him to a higher accountability than their own imperfect white favs, and for reducing him to just a prop for white men to fight about.

The previous two jokes in the Jokes section were primarily used as justification for insulting Skeppy and as examples for why he should not be allowed to join the QSMP, as well as his inactive streaming schedule (although he uploaded Youtube videos almost daily), and used as a reason to vote against BadBoyHalo in his bid for the QSMP presidency. Skeppy being a world traveled POC already practicing Spanish and knowing some Arabic was completely ignored by the QSMP fandom who only saw him as an English speaking American and an extension of BadBoyHalo.

Y’all see a middle eastern man and run for the hills. I’m genuinely in awe in how like??? Aggressive so many people are at the sheer mention of Skeppy vs so many other options that involve white men. Requesting other ccs is nice. But I’m so dead ass when I say to please reevaluate your attitude towards ccs, because MANY of y’all reek with this inherent and harsh hatred pointed specifically at poc ccs. This is literally the first time I’ve ever pulled the racist card but oh my gosh. People want people added all the time in the qsmp. But EVERY *single* time Skeppy is brought up, y’all have this VERY strange need to completely throw him down and giving excuses of “He’ll only be gay” or “he won’t contribute anything at all” like I’m begging y’all to please listen to yourselves and listen VERY VERY carefully.

Jess @jessdoritowhale [12]

The problem starts when you are unable to separate a poc creator from his white friend. Skeppy is his OWN person besides BadBoyHalo. They are best friends, still, reducing him to only that is the main reason we are calling you all a bunch of racists

@skeppyspoc [13]

A lot of them don’t actually care if he’s active or not, they’re using it as an excuse that way they don’t have to admit that A) they hate bad and want to keep skeppy away out of spite, b) they’re plain racist, or c) they’re 4halo shippers who think that skeppy will “ruin 4halo” or maybe they’re all three? Anyway, babes, Skeppy is his own person, not part of bad, and guess what? 4halo isn’t real in the first place. It’s roleplay. Canon and fanon aren’t always perfectly aligned, that’s the point of fanfiction. Treating bad as if he belongs to forever is also sickening. Neither bad nor skeppy “belong” to anyone. Your hate or your ships do not dictate who ccs you watch are allowed to interact with

An interesting irony was, despite Skeppy's tasteless jokes, the QSMP creator that won the presidency turned out to have actually had relationships with underage fans in the past and had much more, and more vulgar, grooming jokes on twitter than Skeppy, and his QSMP running mate who lambasted Skeppy was known to have been abusive to his ex girlfriend, though the hypocrisy that someone would forgive an actual abuser and remain their fan while complaining about mere jokes was lost on them.

Weppy and Other Fanart Woes

sootsink asking other fans to stop whitewashing Skep.

Because Skeppy is a POC content creator there is pushback against artists who white wash or 'graywash' (color skin a distinctly gray shade) Skeppy to give him the correct skin color and features in fanworks. On Twitter, 'Weppy' is the nickname for the whitewashed fanart of Skeppy. Artists will sometimes go so far as to recolor or redraw fanart they view as having whitewashed Skeppy if the original artist refuses to do so themselves. Tensions between fans can sometimes be exacerbated by Skeppy[15] or his friends[16] liking fanart that includes him 'incorrectly colored'.

On Twitter however, this normally just cause is sometimes taken too far and used more like a weapon to harass fanartists. Even ones that 'correctly' color Skeppy, or have in the past, can be attacked en masse with racism accusations. For example, there are color charts[17] sometimes passed around with "acceptable" colors for Skeppy's skin tone and even when artists use them, they can still be accused of drawing him too light.[18] There is rarely leeway given for style or other artistic endeavors. The primary goal no longer becomes to educate and encourage change, but instead to force artists out of the fandom, as hostile fans dogpile, blacklist, insult and even go so far as to remind people that the artist is/was 'racist' with any new fanart they might produce.

The same thing can happen with NSFW that can be linked to a SFW account, even though Skeppy hasn't technically said anything about what fan content he prefers his fans produce, perhaps because there is large overlap with his fanbase and BadBoyHalo's (who has said he doesn't like NSFW content).
