Blood for the Blood God is a quote that originated from Warhammer 40000. The full quote is actually "blood for the Blood God, skulls for the Skull Throne", but this is usually shortened to just the first half.[1] It is also commonly associated with the late Minecraft YouTuber Technoblade, who used the phrase often and was known as the "Blood God" by fans, with the phrase becoming a rallying cry for the community alongside "Technoblade Never Dies".
In Warhammer Fandom
This article or section needs expansion. |
In Warhammer 40k, the phrase is associated with the character Khorne, the blood god in question. It is a battlecry for the Chaos Space Marines faction.
It has also become a snowclone meme in general, with "X for the X God" being used by both fans and non-fans.
In Technoblade's Fandom
"Blood for the Blood God" is used as a catchphrase or rallying cry by Technoblade's fans due to his fondness of the phrase and frequent use of it.
The phrase first became associated with Techno during a SkyWars video, and his fans began to spam it in his chat during Minecraft Monday.[2]
Fans often refer to Techno as the "Blood God", either as an affectionate nickname, or portraying him in fanworks as an actual deity of blood. There are over a thousand works tagged "Blood God Technoblade (Video Blogging RPF)" on Archive of Our Own as of December 2023.[3]
The phrase is frequently used as a caption for fanart of Techno, and has even been made into a few fan songs. For example, Precious Jewel Amor wrote the song "blood for the blood god - a technoblade anthem", and it also features in Derivakat's giant collaboration song, "Voices", featuring backup vocals from 70 community members. A fan on Reddit, Calavid, made a homebrew Warlock subclass for Dungeons & Dragons based on Technoblade titled "Otherworldly Patron: The Blood God".
Several fans have used the phrase while donating blood following Techno's initial sarcoma diagnosis.[4][5]
Interaction Between Both Groups
There is largely a lack of conflict between the two groups associated with the term over percieved "ownership", for the most part. In the Tumblr tag for the phrase, members of both fandoms can be seen using it with few fights between the groups or complaints about the other. The groups seem to have a general respect for each other, with one Warhammer fan in the tag saying "our condolences to our brother in Khorne" following the announcement of Technoblade's death.[6]
Technoblade admittedly didn't know much about the game himself.
He knew of it (iirc one of his uncles plays Warhammer and told him about the Warhammer community being confused when "blood for the blood god" was trending), but he doesn't know much about it (didn't seem to know Khorne was the name of the blood god).u/Raithul [7]
I think that, in his latest stream, Techno just learned that the blood god's name is Khorne (from the warhammer franchise), and promptly had an existential crisis over his patron deity having the same pronunciation as a farm crop.u/gojiSquid [8]
On Reddit, fans of Warhammer don't mind younger people associating the quote with Technoblade.[9]
I would say, encouraged even.u/ShineCalm8874
Crossover fanart of the two have been made, such as this piece of Techno in 40k commissioned by a fan on Reddit. This fanart was also shared on r/Warhammer40k to much positive reception:

Technoblade never dies! That is some of the sickest fanart I've ever seen!u/M0rtimus13
Following with Techno's own self-deprecating and sarcastic sense of humor, fans on his subreddit sometimes make memes about the quote being unoriginal or Techno being a copy of Khorne.[10]
During r/place 2023, there was discussion among Warhammer fans about forming an alliance with r/Technoblade.[11]
Some fans of the game cite Technoblade as having introduced them to the game:
