Herobrine is a community-made Creepypasta character for Minecraft.

Canon

The actual creator of Herobrine is unknown, as the original poster, Minecraft Forums user Flaky claimed to have copied the story from /v/ on 4chan. Flaky posted the original Herobrine post to Minecraft Forums on July 31, 2010. The post claims to have seen an entity with glowing white eyes while listening to the 13 music disc.[1] A YouTube video was linked in the comments, an upload of the song 13, which has the white eyes in the background.[2] A day later on August 1st, 2010, another Minecraft Forums user known as Endorphine would make a post titled "I cannot take it anymore.", in which they lament how they would see these white pixels whenever they played.[3] They would initially dub the entity "White Eyes", and refer to it as female.

By August 24, the story had shifted to involve a version of the default "Steve" skin with whited-out eyes.[4] It's unclear when the story evolved to have this entity take on the name Herobrine, but a Twitter user tweeted at Notch on August 19th, asking him about an alleged dead brother named Herobrine.[5]

Herobrine would be featured as a cameo in several instances of official Minecraft content by Mojang. Most notably, Herobrine is often noted in changelogs - "Removed Herobrine".
