Canon Lives is a term referring to the three-life system that Dream SMP uses to determine which characters are permanently dead. The system originated as a fan theory created by u/usedforwholesomeness on r/dreamsmp[1], which was then accepted into canon.
Canon Deaths
Since Minecraft often results in many deaths and some players do wish to permanently kill off their characters for some reason or another, the system was created to allow story-related deaths to still have a noteworthy impact despite Minecraft's respawn system. Deaths that are considered to take away a canon life are referred to as canon deaths, and almost always occur during a notable plot beat.
Revival
Canonically dead characters can be revived using the Revival Book. This has only been seen a few times - TommyInnit was revived by Dream using this method, and Wilbur Soot was also revived this way, but it's also worth noting that Jack Manifold was somehow able to revive himself by crawling out of Hell.
Characters Who Have Canonically Died
Only a handful of characters have been considered canonically dead at some point:
- ConnorEatsPants - Killed by DreamXD, was spiritually tied to Rosie the Sheep by Kristin and brought back to the Syndicate
- Dream - Was killed and revived by Punz as an experiment, killed by Tubbo before being revived by Punz again, and was finally killed by the Project Early Dawn nuke
- Jschlatt - Died of a heart attack
- LazarBeam and Vikkstar - Killed and revived multiple times by Dream and Punz before being permanently killed to keep the secret from getting out
- Mexican Dream - Killed by Dream in Logstedshire
- Punz - Was killed and revived by Dream as an experiment, and was finally killed by the Project Early Dawn nuke
- TommyInnit - Was killed and revived by Dream two times, and was finally killed by the Project Early Dawn nuke
- Tubbo - Was killed by the Project Early Dawn nuke
- Wilbur Soot - Was killed by Philza before being revived
