Grian/GoodTimesWithScar, popularly known as Scarian, is the M/M pairing of Grian and GoodTimesWithScar (Scar) from the Life SMP Series and Hermitcraft. The pairing primarily refers to the relationship between their Minecraft characters as opposed to being RPF, but it can refer to both.
The platonic version of the pairing is commonly known as Desert Duo.
Canon
Scar and Grian first met in season 6 of Hermitcraft and quickly became friends, even though they often ended up on opposing sides of conflicts, e.g. ConCorp vs. Sahara, Detective Grian vs. the Jangler, the Hermitville Build-Off, the Hippies vs. Area 51, and most prominently in season 7, Mother Spore vs. the Mayor.
The popularity of the pairing increased massively due to the Life series, especially 3rd Life and Double Life. During 3rd Life, Grian was the cause of Scar’s first death by means of a prank gone wrong. In recompense, he promised to stay by Scar’s side until he also lost his first life. He spent a great deal of his time fighting beside Scar and protecting him from their enemies. Despite pretending to be annoyed at their arrangement, Grian stayed allied to Scar throughout the rest of the season and admitted that he never planned on leaving Scar at all. They ended up as the final two, choosing to fight each other with no weapons and armor to keep it fair. Scar died by Grian's hand, and Grian quickly followed by throwing himself off of the nearby cliff. Their base in a desert and plan to claim a monopoly on sand led to the name "desert duo" for the platonic pairing.
In Double Life, Grian and Scar were soul-bound to each other, and referred to each other as soulmates. Grian was dismayed at being linked to Scar, and later found a “secret soulmate” in Bigbst4tz2 (Bigb), with blatant references to it being an affair. Despite this, Grian was directly responsible for Bigb’s permadeath by killing his soul-bound partner Rendog (Ren) and spent the rest of the season with Scar.
Grian and Scar also had many other interactions in the other seasons of the Life series with frequent callbacks to their previous relationship(s).
They also continued to interact on Hermitcraft, where they were both members of Boatem in season 8, both members of the Buttercups in season 9, and neighbors for the third season in a row as well as both members of the Permit Office in season 10.
Fandom
Scarian is the most popular ship in both the Life SMP Series fandom and the Hermitcraft fandom. Romantic interpretations of their relationship tend to focus more on their time together in the Life SMP Series, however this has carried over into their interactions on Hermitcraft as well, as the fandoms tend to overlap.
The ship name Scarian is a portmanteau of their names. (Scar previously used the term to refer to his own fans, though less so in recent years.)
Popular Tropes
Angst - The Life SMP Series is set inside of a battle royale styled death game, making angst a common genre of fanwork.
Fluff - Usually set in a Hermitcraft setting as opposed to the Life SMP Series.
Mutual Pining - Often in the context of them both knowing they will die and choosing not to pursue each other romantically.
Wings - Grian is commonly given bird-like traits in fanon, which leads to the inclusion of Wing Fic tropes.
Transfic - Tends to portray Grian as transmasc, but can also focus on transmasc Scar. May also portray either of them as transfem.
Infidelity - Angst based on Grian and Bigb being "secret soulmates" in Double Life while Grian and Scar were soul-bound.
Superhero AU - Often follows Scar’s canon superhero alter ego “Hotguy” and Grian as his side-kick “Cuteguy” in a modern setting.
Crossdressing - Typically follows Grian's canon popstar alter ego "Ariana Griande" and/or Scar's fanon alter ego "Sabrina Scarpenter".
