From The Archives, also informally known as The Hermit Archives or The Hermitcraft Archives is a Fusion fic, or rather a fic series, between the Hermitcraft and Life SMP Series fandoms (with some other occasional wider MCYT references) and The Magnus Archives horror podcasts. It substitutes several MCYT characters for the roles in The Magnus Archives, and explores what might change with them there and how they might do in that setting.
This specific AU setting was thought up and discussed by Sixteenthdays, Chrisrin, and others a bit before the series began to be written. And "The Magnus Archives AUs" have since become a fairly common discussion topic in MCYT fandoms in general. There seems to be some interest or resonance between the two.
The fic series has also spawned a performed podcast version.
The series focuses on the characters of Grian, Pearlescent Moon (aka Pearl Moon), Goodtimeswithscar, Impulse, and Mumbo Jumbo - a grouping often known as "The Boatem Crew" for their Hermitcraft season 8 collaboration, but most of whom have also had versions of their character in the Life SMP Series as well. They take the role of the central Archival Staff in The Magnus Archives, working in a paranormal research archive, with Grian taking the place of Head Archivist. Other MCYT characters take other roles as side characters.
The choice of Grian as head archivist is interesting because it allows, and is used for, comparisons between the archivists canonical links with an entity known as The Eye in TM canon, and Grian's fanon (with a canon reference, but mostly fanon) connection with "The Watchers" and "The Listeners" in EVO SMP/Life SMP lore - and fanon content of Watcher!Grian which is fairly popular and widespread. The series also plays on fan connections between Grian and Avian or birdlike features. However, it does so in a more paranormal or horror related way.
It re-interprets several plot points from both MCYT series in a different AU setting, and weaves in character's stories in a way many fans appreciate. Some of the referenced events include Cleo's macabre statue work, the Hermitcraft season 8 finale involving Moon themes, and the great dog/wolf army and hunt of the 3rd Life SMP Series. They also work in a meta reference - referencing a certain event in Hermitcraft. They reference RenDog and DocM77's ARG, which played with alternate layers of reality and the 4th wall, by having a story where RenDog and DocM77 find a book that gives them information that implies (which they catch the implications of) that they are "in a fanfic" or rather that in-universe they are in an "alternate universe or timeline" and that TMA exists in it's own timeline as well.
The series is set up similar to The Magnus Archives in that each story is set up as an "episode" with a self contained monster or paranormal "problem" and some also contain information that contribute to larger character growth arcs or larger plots. It is continuing, but had a large climax and wrap-up of the larger plots at episode 48, which the author decided would be an end of a "season" similar to the 40 episode "seasons" in TMA. Each episode/story is about 1000 - 2500 words or 10-13 minutes performed aloud, with some outliers, as in comparison to TMA's roughly 25 minute episodes.
Spinoffs and Metafandom
From The Archives has a significant fandom, and has spawned as offshoots, a few short stories, as well as a full cast podcast now in the process of being put up on Youtube (in progress, having just put up the 12th episode), by a group project going by "The Red Feather Team". The Podcast version can be found Here on Youtube. There have also been a handful of animatics, possibly as many as 5, with notable ones including Turn The Lights off, Yellow, and 00.5.
Many chapters/episodes now also have an illustration.
