from Bright Center of the Universe #3: "Dedicated To the Fans of Stars Wars -- Your continued interest in the Star Wars Universe has encouraged Authors, Artists and Editors to continue to work in Star Wars. It is your interest that keeps Star Wars alive. The above picture is the medal given out at the Star Awards presentation that occured [sic] at Media-West in 1992. Presentations were made for best Star Wars Material of 1990-1991"

The STAR aWARdS were established by Judith Yuenger:

Some years ago, I started doing these awards because there were no awards for SW zines. I had been reading them avidly and thought it was a shame that those people got no recognition for their contributions. When I started the awards, I wanted to include everyone and not just stuff that was nominated so that all zines in a given year were eligible. I must alter that to read all the zines that I know about. I take all the contents of those zines and put them into categories. The categories have changed over the years until we ended up with the present ballot.[1]

Certificates

Artists volunteered to create certificates which were then mailed to the winners. Voting was open to anyone who submitted a ballot but ballots had to be printed out and mailed in. Voters could pick up to three in each category and rate them according to preference.

You can see some past ones here: The STAR aWARdS -- About The STAR aWARdS, Archived version.

The Last Year

In 2001, the last ballot was sent out for the 2000 awards ( also see screenshot). After the 2000 results were announced, no further award ballots were mailed.

Fan Reaction

In 1994, a fan encouraged an expansion of the award's content:

The bunch that backed the Star Awards (we loosely call ourselves the consortium) would like to add a costuming award to the zine awards. Both to promote costuming and recognize some of the people who have been doing such great work over the years. As you can imagine this promotes all types of problems, but we want this to be a SW function, as ts the Star Awards, not Costume Guild or MediaWest program. Naturally we could have a problem with 70 Leias, 90 Lukes and any number of Hans, so we have to develop some type of guidelines. What do you fens think of the idea? Sends note and any ideas to either myself or Judith Yuenger so we can start work on this. After all, it took almost 2 years to develop the Star aWards concept. We would like to do this one a bit faster.[2]

In 1994, a fan wanted to see more pomp and circumstance and compared the Fan Q Award ceremony to the STAR aWARdS one:

The Fan Q's I have to say were a real deflating experience by comparison. Not so much because of the "who won" aspect (was very pleased to see Wanda's "Glass Garden" earn a just reward for all the hard work), but just the atmosphere of presentation ... or lack thereof. They should take lessons from Judy in how to make a presentation ceremony something special and to be remembered.[3]

In a 1995, one fan wrote:

I can't stress to you how important it is to all the writers, artists, poets, filkers, cartoonists, and editors who bring you zines that you give them support through this award. If you've ever attended the STAR aWARdS ceremony at MediaWest*Con, you will know what I mean. The excitement, encouragement and enjoyment that the winners and runners-up receive from this award is a pleasure to behold. It lets these folks know that you appreciate the effort they're putting out for our favorite fandom and that we want them to go on. Unlike the nominating process for the FanQ's, which occasionally seems like a BNF popularity contest, the STAR aWARdS were designed so that everyone who'd had anything in a SW zine the previous year would be eligible.[4]

A Proprietary Interest?

By 2000, several fan websites had linked to the Star Awards, including the Corellian Embassy. Such links usually included a description of what the awards were, a link to the MediaWestCon site, an email link to Judy Yuenger (to get information or a ballot), and a list of all the award winners and honorable mentions. Because the Corellian Embassy had been nominated for awards in the past, they were told to remove links to the awards page to avoid creating the appearance of a "conflict of interest". The Corellian Embassy agreed, while noting that the information was non-proprietary and that it could only benefit the Awards to get greater exposure.
