Veela's Inc. is for Veela and Harry Potter supporters, but mainly for female Harry Potter slash fanatics and shippers.

Veela Inc. was a mailing list and Yahoo group, a now-defunct website, and loose grouping of Harry Potter slash writers and artists. It was formed in late December 2001 by Libertine, Ivy Blossom, Kissaki, Rube, and Chrissy. Most members met in a Harry Potter slash Yahoo group.

The five frequently congregated on the IRC chatroom #malfoymanor, which features prominently in Libertine's fanfic "Harry Potter and the Internet." It was formed in order to gather a community specifically for slashers and those writing and reading more mature fanfiction. After a falling out of the original five members, a new slate of veelas appeared, including Nefeleo, Penelope Z, Olympia M, Ruby Debrazier, and digikym.

Notable frequent visitors to #malfoymanor included Aja Romano, phatphatkitty, eleveninches, Aspen, Abaddon, and occasional members of The Inner Circle.

Website

The website hosted fanfiction, author sites and included resources such as a list of Harry Potter slash writers' websites and a Harry Potter Slash Fanfiction Glossary page. It was a member of the Potterfic Alliance. A joint writing challenge with all site members was created and published in The Great Veela Round Robin with the only rule that only Libertine could add characters Mary Sue.

Glossary

The website had an extensive glossary page.[3]

THE SHIP CODES

RATINGS

/: the slash symbol is complicated. Historically it is the origin of the term slash, which denotes a male/male sexual relationship upon which the fic is centred. The slash itself is used to separate/join two character names. (The standard in other fandoms, like BTVS or SV, is to blend names together to indicate a pairing, ie, 'Spuffy', 'Clex'. HP doesn't blend names, it uses the /, probably because there are just too many characters to keep track of.) The practice of adding a slash between two character names is not specific to the slash fandom, however; Hermione/Harry and Ginny/Pansy are equally kosher uses of the symbol.

!: in old programming code, the ! means 'not'. !Harry would be 'not Harry'. In current fandom practice, the ! is used to insert a descriptor to a character. For instance: DV!Draco would mean Draco as he is represented in Draco Veritas; dark!Harry would be any evil version of Harry. The 'not' is still somewhat implied, as if a character is getting an insertion with a !, that character is no longer canon.

A

Actorfic: A story about the actors, rather than the characters themselves. See Real Person Slash (RPS) or Real Person Fiction (RPF).

AIM: AOL Instant Messenger. An important piece of software used by fanfiction writers to contact each other. Also see YM, MSN, Trillian, Fire, Proteus, and so forth. You can download AIM for yourself here.

A/N: an Author's Note. This is where the author inserts some commentary about the fic, including thanks to friends and beta readers. Sometimes these are scattered throughout the fic, sometimes they are simply a note at the top or bottom of the file. Scattering them through the fic is probably not a good idea.

archive/archivist: an archive is a website dedicated to hosting fics. Some archives are exclusive, and others are open to all. An archivist is the person responsible for the website, and generally the person who chooses which fics end up in the archive. Some archives include FA, DA, PSA.

AU: Alternate Universe. A fic wherein the storyline is outside the universe of the books. Setting the fic in a different time period, when Draco is a muggle, when Harry's parents are still alive. Wizards in space!

Author's Note: A/N.

B

Badfic: Usually an intentionally awful fic usually written to prove a point (ie, that badfics often get far more reviews than good fics, or to make fun of common cliches). Can also mean a fic not intented to be bad, but is anyway. See plebe.

BDSM: Bondage Domination sadomasochism. It has been said that there is no true BDSM in HP fanfic at present. Consider that a challenge. Ecchibi writes: "It's best to mention, since so few people actually know that this is the case, that in fanfiction, there are two kinds of BDSM. There's realistic (i.e. like what people who are in the BDSM scene in real life do) BDSM, in which keeping all activities consensual and safe is a big deal, and fantasy BDSM, which is often nonconsensual or questionably consensual and possibly dangerous. (You don't see safewords in fantasy BDSM, that's for sure.) Realistic BDSM tends to be harder to write, and not just because many people don't know anything about it anyway, so it's less common." BDSM fics in Harry Potter fandom would be lemons.

beta: to read over someone's fic before publishing, checks over a fic for spelling and grammar issues, plot problems, characterization issues, and so forth. ("can you beta this fic?"); the title of the person who has agreed to beta your fics for you ("I send part 5 to my beta.")

beta reader: the full title of a beta.

beta version: a rough draft of a story.

blog: weblog. An online journal. Livejournals are forms of blogs. See blogger, diaryland, opendiary, graymatter, thraxil, and so on. Blogs are basically the new version of the personal webpage, and are defined by regular updates and date stamps.

BNF: Big Name Fan. Any well-known fandom personality. These vary depending on who you're talking to.

C

challenge: a fic challenge. Generally posted on a mailing list, fic challenges generally setunusual topics or pairings for participants to attempt writing a fic for. ("I got Snape/Gryffindor Quidditch Team in the fic challenge!")

canon: anything that happens in the Harry Potter books is the canon. A canon timeline, for instance, would detail all the events that happen in the books. To describe something in fanfiction as 'canon' is to say that it is very close to what happens in the books.

Cassandra Claire: Who is she? Cassie is a very nice young woman living in New York city. She is a professional writer and writes Harry Potter epics for fun. She was one of the first people to write about Draco in a positive light, and has changed his fanon existence from annoying little git to loveable, angsty little quasi-hero. Her major work is the Draco Trilogy. She is also extremely well known for a little ditty called The Very Secret Diaries, for Lord of the Rings fandom. In spite of being an uberauthor, Cassie is a perfectly lovely girl. A dem fine woman, sir. A dem fine woman.

chanslash: a fic where a very young child is depicted in sexual situations.

character code: or ship code. The letters in the header of a story that indicate the pairing. H/D, H/Hr, H/G, etc. (A partial list of common and uncommon codes can be found here.)

Citrus: (or citrusy) refers to a fic that is not blatantly sexual but is getting there. Sheer smut is referred to as a 'lime' or a 'lemon', hence the use of the term 'citrus'.

cookie: a piece of a fic released before the fic is officially released. Generally posted to a blog, journal, or mailing list.

CoS: short form for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

crossover: a fic that blends two or more fandoms. (Harry Potter/Buffy/Due South)

D

DA: DiagonAlley. An exclusive archive run by Ali. DA houses all kinds of fics, entirely dependent on whether or not Ali likes them and has read them. You can submit fics to Ali to consider, and you can peruse her message boards to chat with the locals.

DD/DS/DV: the Draco Trilogy by Cassandra Claire. Draco Dormiens, Draco Sinister, Draco Veritas.

Draconian: A mailing list and yahoo group dedicated to all things Draco, moderated by Rhysenn. Check it out here.

dark!Harry: a characterization where Harry's darker side is explored. (dark!anyone could also be used.)

darkfic: A fic wherein the dark sides of things are highlighted. For instance: if Harry becomes a Death Eater and kills Hermione before raping Draco and killing himself, that would be a darkfic. Tends to have gothic overtones and describes anger, pain, suffering, and generally does not have a positive resolution. No happy endings here.

deadjournal: a form of blog; a diary program online (found here) that allows users to create communities and comment on each others posts. Along with the more popular livejournal, used by fic writers as update journals, scrapbooks, or as ways to comment on and talk about fics and fic writing. Livejournal requires a code or payment, deadjournal is free, though it has ads.

deathfic: a fic in which main characters die, often by suicide.

delurk: to stop lurking on a list of fandom and post a fic, an introduction, or a review.

DiagonAlley: An exclusive archive, often referred to as DA, run by Ali. DA houses all kinds of fics, entirely dependent on whether or not Ali likes them and has read them. You can submit fics to Ali to consider, and you can peruse her message boards to chat with the locals.

dj: see deadjournal or livejournal.

disclaimer: This is a general apology/warning that the author is using someone else's characters, that s/he is not making any money from doing so, and acknowledging the original author.

drabble: less than a ficlet, a drabble is a short bit of writing that not supposed to exceed 100 words, but often does. Often one scene, a bit of dialogue, or a character sketch. Often found on livejournals. Often used in challenges because they are quick and dirty. So to speak.

F

FA: Fictionalley.org. A popular archive that is somewhat selective but generally accepts a wide range of fics of all varieties, except NC-17 rated fics. They are endorsed by Warner Bros. and run by a group of fabulous people.

FAP: Fiction Alley Park, a messageboard on which folk who frequent the fictionalley archive may discuss various topics and fics.

fanart: artwork based on either a) canon, or b) fanon. Fanartists are highly sought after in the HP fandom and many fanfiction authors proudly display the fanart that has been created for their fics. HP fanartists, and all bookcentric fanartists, have the advantage of having no one face for any of the characters; while Tom Felton plays Draco Malfoy in the HP films, most fanart does not depict Tom Felton. Fanartists are at liberty to draw characters however they see fit. A good source for HP fanart is the livejournal, HPart.

fandom: the term meaning all activity by fans. The Harry Potter fandom, for instance, includes all ships, gen, het, and slash; it includes fanfiction but is not necessarily limited to it. A convention, for instead, could be of interest to the entire fandom.

fandom_wank: or f_w. fandom_wank was a livejournal community that was suspended for violations of the Terms of Service (otherwise knowed as TOSed). The mission statement of fandom_wank involves seeking out fandom discussion that is particularly, er, wanky, and posting about it. The definition of 'wank' is nebulous; it can be someone taking fandom way too seriously, or someone behaving badly, or someone becoming ridiculously egotistical. Generally fandom_wank posts links just to livejournal posts of fans of various fandoms, but sometimes also messageboard and newsgroup threads as well. Opinon on fandom_wank is varied; many people are unhappy with what the deem harassment by fandom_wank and its readers; others find it occaisionally amusing. Still others prefer to ignore it entirely, which is probably a wise course of action. When one's journal is linked on fandom_wank, one has 'been wanked'. "OMG, I got wanked!" The community has moved around a lot; since being TOSed on livejournal it was then moved to blurty, where it was also TOSed. Now being hosted by a livejournal clone set up by friends of f_w entirely to house it: journalfen. You can read it here.

fanfiction: fiction written about characters from a television show, book, or film. also Fan Fiction.

fanfic: another term for fan fiction.

fangirl: a fan of a particular author. ("She was my fangirl and now she's a big name author!") Can also be a verb ("She fangirled me!") for when someone contacts you and gets extremely enthusiastic about your work. Sometimes considered derrogative, mostly by people who are afraid that BNFs hate their fangirls.

fanon: this is what has become standard in fanfiction, but is not actually in the canon. Knowledge that is generally understood by fanfiction readers and writers that is actually unconfirmed. Pansy being blonde (I think) is fanon; Blaise being a girl (or a boy) is fanon; most ships are fanon, of course.

femslash: (femmeslash) lesbian pairings. Pansy/Ginny, Hermione/Ginny. Female slash. Also called yuri, which is the manga term.

fen: plural of fan, beacuse somehow 'fans' wasn't good enough.

ff.net: shorthand for fanfiction.net, a relatively open archive with a php upload capability. A huge centre of HP fics of all varieties, as well as hundreds of other fandoms. Used to be nondiscriminatory, but then decided not to host RPS, and then, with no warning at all, decided to delete all NC-17 rated fics. Needless to say, much of the fandom was a bit ticked off about that particular move, understandable as it is in the face of lawyer persecution. ff.net is also well-known for having banned Cassandra Claire on a trumped up plagiarism charge. Mostly full of plebey crap at this point anyway. We prefer snitchfiction.net or FA.

fic: a fanfiction story. The term 'fic' is not limited by length; a novel length story or a 4 page one-off can be referred to as a fic.

fic challenge: When someone sets challenge pairings or circumstances for groups of writers to attempt, with a deadline.

ficlet: a short fic, only one part, generally under 4 pages.

fictionalley: Fictionalley.org. A popular archive that is somewhat selective but generally accepts a wide range of fics of all varieties, except NC-17 rated fics. They are endorsed by Warner Bros. and run by a group of fabulous people.

filk: a musical parody. When the lyrics of a song are altered to fit a character or scene from canon. Unlike songfics, filks don't add narrative around lyrics to a song, they actually are the song, tweaked.

Fire: An all-in-one instant messenger program for the mac, like Proteus. This program can use all the other programs at once, like AIM, MSN, Y!M, and so forth. You can download Fire here. The all-in-one program for windows is Trillian.

flame: an email, post, or blog/lj entry with the purpose of insulting, unfairly criticizing, or embarrassing someone. The person who flames another is referred to a as flamer or a troll. ("Did you see that Julie got flamed on her lj?" "I got email from that troll again.") Flamers sometimes consider their post/email/lj entry to be a JA, or Justified Attack.

fluff: A fluff fic is generally free from angst. It is happy and light and no one suffers. Fics can have fluffy elements, or can be entirely made up of fluff.

Founderfic: a fic using the four Hogwarts founders, Goderic Gryffindor, Salazar Slytherin, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw. Usually a medieval fic, but also can involve bringing the founders into the present time.

f_w: see Fandom_Wank.

G

Gary Stu/Mary Sue: a character who is the author in disguise. Normally a Gary Stu/Mary Sue is the hero of the story, all the character fall in love with him/her, she is outrageously fabulous and beautiful and powerful. Mary Sue stories are basically elaborate fantasies wherein the author gets to pretend that s/he is magical and is in the book. While there are some interesting and well-written Mary Sues, generally they are not very good.

gen: A story without any particular pairing. A story that is more focused on plots or individual characters than romantic entanglements.

GoF: short forom for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

H

het: a story with a heterosexual pairing. ("I write het," "I can't find any het," "Is that fic het?")

I

IC/OOC: In Character/Out Of Character. This is generally a compliment or an criticism. ("Your Draco is really IC!" "Do you think it's too OOC for Harry to burst into tears in the Great Hall?" "Oh, her Snape is always OOC!") If something is OOC it has strayed too far from the canon and is thus unbelievable. For your character to in IC means that it is staying true to the qualities s/he showed in the books.

Intellislasher: Who knows. Apparently the term is in flux. Break it down into it's parts: intelli-slasher. Use it at will.

IP: A short form for Irresistible Poison, one of the first epic Harry/Draco fanfics by Rhysenn.

J

JA: Justified Attack. A nice way to refer to a flame. A nasty form of criticism that doesn't intend to be constructive, but only to complain about fics that get more reviews/attention than others. Or fics that are terribly written but lauded anyway.

JKR: short for J.K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter books. ("Did JKR mention how old Snape is supposed to be?")

L

lemon: a fic that is basically nothing but smut. Generally not used when a long fic gets smutty for a moment, though in that case someone might warn that the part is lemonish. ("This is the lemon part, so beware!") A lemon is generally rated NC-17, and thus has sexual content with no holds barred.

lime: a mild form of lemon. The denotation 'lime' can be used for fics with mild sexual content. Nothing graphic, but sexual content just the same.

listmum: see mod.

livejournal: a form of blog; a diary program online (found here) that allows users to create communities and comment on each others posts. Widely used by fic writers as update journals, scrapbooks, or as ways to comment on and talk about fics and fic writing. Deadjournal is also used; while livejournal requires a code or payment, deadjournal is free, though it has ads. Little siblings of the livejournal are appearing everywhere these days: far too many for me to keep track of! People in the fandom use all of them, but livejournal is still the kingpin of journaling software among the Harry Potter-minded.

lj: see livejournal.

lurker: someone who reads a mailing list, or a livejournal, or in a chatroom, or anything that involves participation, without participating.

M

mailing list: an email group where people subscribe, they send email to a central address which then distributes the email to everyone on the list. There are hundreds of different mailing lists for Harry Potter fanfiction, many of which are hosted by yahoo groups.

Manga: a form of Japanese comics with a very particular stylized quality. Actually, a very very wide-ranging term. Manga is like a comic book to us, but more like a cross between a text book, a romance novel, a how-to guide, and a graphic novel to the Japanese. There is Manga for everything: office lady manga, the history of communism manga, manga for two year olds, for teenaged boys, for pre-teen girls, pornographic manga for 50-something straight men, you name the audience, there's manga for it. There is also a subset of manga directed, I think, at women which is what we would call slash. Boy/boy love stories in graphic novel format. Probably directed at young girls, but I'm not clear on the audience for that stuff. This is generally called yaoi (or slash). There is a yaoi trope to have a dark haired boy paired up with a platinum haired boy, which is why, I think, yaoi is so incredibly prominent in Harry Potter fandom. ("Hey look! It's Harry and Draco!")

Mary Sue/Gary Stu: a character who is the author in disguise. While there are some interesting and well-written Mary Sues, generally they are not very good.

meme: (meem) A contagious information pattern that replicates by parasitically infecting human minds and altering their behaviour, causing them to propagate the pattern. (Term coined by Dawkins, by analogy with "gene".) Usually used to refer to various survey-type questionaires that are filled out on livejournals and copied by others. ("100 things about me", "My fics: Likes and Dislikes", and so forth.)

mod: moderator of a mailing list or a bulletin board. A group can have multiple mods. Mods monitor the list or board, remove inappropriate messages, and sometimes prod people to stay on topic or stop spamming the list. Sometimes also known as a 'listmum'.

MPREG: Male Pregnancy. A story about boys getting pregnant. Yeah, I'm not joking.

MSN: an instant messenger program, like AIM, YM, Trillian, Proteus, or Fire. Fanfiction writers like to keep in touch with each other using instant messangers. You can download MSN here.

MST: short for Mystery Science Theatre 3000, a tv show (and later films) from public television in Minnesota where characters watch a terrible film and add commentary throughout. It is outrageously funny, and if you don't know it now, go rent them. Now. Seriously. To MST a fic (MSTing), or to write an MST, is to take someone's fic and make commentary through it. Often people have the characters comment on it for them. Generally considered to be an elaborate flame, MSTs aren't allowed on ff.net.

muse: The muses are supposed to be feminine spirits that inspire poetry, history, art, and so forth. People often talk about their muses forcing certain plot twists, or their muses deserting them. Muses sometimes take the form of specific characters, or there are muses for each character. ("My Draco muse wants to pout, but he's supposed to sympathetic.")

MWPP: The MWPP generation is Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs. An MWPP fic is one set in their generation, generally a school story.

N

NCD: Needless Character Death. A criticism. When characters are killed and the reader is thrown into a tizzy for no very good reason. Character death is generally something that should be approached with caution as it upsets fans.

Non con: Non consensual sexual activity, otherwise known as rape. ("This is non con, do you mind reading it?")

O

OC: Original Character. This is often just a more respectable term for a Mary Sue, but can also be generic original characters used as background or filler. When students are inserted into, say, Ginny's class (since her roommates are unmentioned in the books), they are OCs.

OOC/IC: Out Of Character/In Character.

OT: Off Topic. Generally used in a subject line in a newsgroup or mailling list where the post itself in not related to fanfiction or the specificed topic of the group. ([OT] I saw a great movie tonight!)

OTP: One True Pairing. This term is used by and for people who have a single ship and can't bear to stray too far from it. They believe that their pairing is the best and nothing else comes close. They believe that true, great love can come from this pairing, and that it is worth exploring over and over and over. ("I can't read Draco/Ron fics. Harry/Draco is my OTP!")

P

pairing: when two characters are paired romantically in a story, that is called a pairing. ("What pairing is that fic?" "Oh, I just read a great new fic, it had a very unusual pairing.")

plebe: short for plebeian, the 'common man'. A plebe is generally someone who can't spell, has a terrible plot, makes her/his characters completely OOC, and generally makes a mess of a fic. To plebe a fic means to take parts of the dialogue and misspell it terribly. To translate to and from plebe. The language of typos. Non words like 'ur' and 'gud' and 'drako' and so forth are part of the plebe vocabulary, as if inserting digits for letters. You get the idea. [Coined by Aspen.]

plebefic: A fic either written by an actual plebe, or one written in the style of a plebe.

plot bunny: an idea that sprouts out of something, sometimes when inappropriate, sometimes just in overabundance. I have heard it used quite positively as well ("I was stalled by I got plotbunnied!" "I love you, you plotbunnied me!") Fanfic-speak for "I just got an idea!"

PoA: Short form for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

POV: Point Of View. The HP books are generally written from a Harry POV, though, never in the first person. Some fics have a single POV, while most shift through out. Some people add a header that indicates who's POV, some people just let you discover it on your own. ("I wrote 6 pages of Draco POV, I'd better write the Snape POV now.")

preslash: (pre-slash). A story is set entirely prior to the beginning of a slash relationship, but explores the interactions between two characters with a clear nod to a slashy future.

PS: short form for Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.

PSA: Potter Slash Archive. An archive maintained by Sarvidana of slash fics involving James or Harry Potter. Quite extensive and exclusive, depending on Sarvi's tastes, which are wide-ranging. Updated regularly.

PWP: "Plot? What Plot?" A story with no plot. Often understood to be a smut fic, or a lemon.

R

rating: all fics are rated, like American movies. G: general audience, PG: Parental Guidance, PG-13: no one under the age of 13, R: restricted, NC-17: no one under the age of 17. Fics are often sorted (or sortable) according to rating. It is generally believed that rating a fic NC-17 is just safer, as at least if someone inappropriate ends up with it, you can claim to have warned. It is also generally believed that slash fics must be automatically rated something other than G. Some people that PG or PG-13 is enough, while others believe that any slash fic should be at least R. Having seen G-rated slash fics, I think this is actually just a form of bigotry, but then, that's just my opinion. For a complete list of ratings as they are generally understood in the Harry Potter fandom, click here.

relationshipper: a person devoted to a particular pairing. The entire term is rarely used in the Harry Potter fandom, replaced by the shorter 'shipper'.

rec: recommendation, or, to recommend, to be recommended. ("I got rec'ed!" "Got any recs?" "I'm going to post a page of fic recs.")

review: feedback. Like a film review. Generally these are insanely positive. Fanfiction.net has a review button and it collects reviews for you on one page, as does FA. People tend to tally up their reviews, and the numbers are important to many people. Reviews are generally public; private email is not generally referred to as a review. Private email from readers is simply email or fanmail, depending on the tone.

round robin: A fic project where one story is passed from author to author until it is completed.

RP: Role Play. Authors will sometimes role play elements of their fics in order to work through plot points or characterization, and sometimes RP ends up dumping right into fics. They do this on AIM or some other messenger, in chatrooms, generally. (I would like to point out at this point that the original Dragonlance books were also written this way.)

RPF: Real Person Fiction. Fics written not about fictional characters, but about real people. Members of bands, actors, and so forth. Fanfiction.net no longer allows real person fics. See also RPS.

RPG: Role Playing Game. This is more complicated than a simple one-off RP. A full game can go on for months or years. RPGs can happen face to face or in any number of environments or software packages. People generally stick to the characters they speak for in the beginning.

RPS: Real Person Slash. Fics written not about fictional characters, but about real people. Members of bands, actors, and so forth. Fanfiction.net no longer allows real person fics.

R/R: Read and Review. People often insert R/R into their summaries on ff.net to encourage people to review their fics. Again, the number of the reviews is critically important to people.

RST/UST: Resolved Sexual Tension/Unresolved Sexual Tension. Fics are generally believed to be best when filled with UST, because it lends a form of angst to the fic that propels it forward, gives it a goal. RST is considered a kind of fic death wish, and should only really happen at the tail end of a fic. I disagree, but again, that's subjective.

Rhysenn: A lovely young woman in Singapore, Rhysenn was one of the first writers to make Harry/Draco a viable pairing. Her fic, Irresistible Poison, is often the first new fans read and is well-loved in the fandom. Because of her paradigm-breaking ideas, she is often the target of anti-slash sentiment on the internet in general, which is highly unfair, especially given that IP is such a perfectly lovely fic.

S

ship: short for relationship. Ships are generally expressed by the names of the characters separated by a slash, even for het pairings. Harry/Hermione, Harry/Draco, Sirius/Remus. Fics are generally organized on archives according to ship.

shipper: calling yourself a shipper indicates that you have a preference for a particular pairing. ("I'm a Harry/Ron shipper, I don't like reading Harry/Draco fics.") People often put shipper buttons on their webpages to advertise their favourite ships.

slash: named for the / used to separate characters, slash means fics wherein two male characters are paired romantically. Not all slash is smutty. Also known as yaoi, in the Japanese manga term. There is some debate over whether slash simply means in inclusion of gay characters in a fic, but since a fic with lots of het characters (as many slash fics have) are never considered het if the main characters are gay and/or in relationships, I would suggest that slash be used only when the gay characters are central, and when a gay relationship is featured. Not necessarily romance, or even a full out long-term commited relationship, but at least the intimations of interest on behalf of a gay character.

slashy: the quality of being slashable. Certain scenes, where two characters share an intense moment, with a possible subtext, is generally called 'slashy'. ("The scenes they cut from the HP film were so slashy!")

slasher: a fic writer who writes slash fics.

snitchfiction: snitchfiction.net. A no-holds-barred archive run by snidget with a self-upload and self-manage feature. Very much like ff.net, but without the NC-17 ban, and exclusively for Harry Potter fics. Watch the snitchfiction livejournal for updates, as the archive is still being built and tweaked.

songfic: The idea here is that one takes a song and writes a fic based on it, so that the lyrics of the song fit the fic. For some unknown reason, this amounts to people posting song lyrics with a few sentences scattered between them. Songfics are generally annoying and silly, and often written by plebes. However, many fics are based on songs. Once a fic becomes more text than lyric, is it rarely considered a songfic.

S&M: sadomaschocism Enjoying the process of causing pain or being in pain.

squee: an expression of joy or admiration, particularly when something is very cute. ("Look at this pic of Dan with his shoes untied!!" "SQUEEEE!")

squick: something repulsive, being repulsed. ("I don't like to read incest fics. They squick me." "My squicks are many." "I'm squicked by chanslash.") Something might also be squicky ("Isilya wrote some very squicky bits for HP&I.").

squickfic: a fic written with the sole purpose of squicking as many people as possible.

SS: short form for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.

T

teaser: see cookie. A teaser is a segment of a fic that hasn't been released yet, like a movie trailer. Usually not more than a paragraph or two. Teasers are often posted to livejournals, blogs, or to mailing lists.

t00b: added by popular demand. Originally coined in an IRC chat room by Kissaki, 't00b' is a fairly meaningless word. In general useage it means 'idiot' in an affectionate way. ("Ali is such a t00b, she left herself signed in on lj on my computer!") It has also come to be used as a verb ("I was t00bing around the fandom and saw THIS!"), in which it case it can be understood to mean goofing off or not doing much that's useful. And that is all I have to say about that.

troll: a post to a mailing list, comment left on a journal or blog, or some other form of public response, left to incite flames or pointless argument. (To a Harry/Draco mailing list: "HARY AND DARCO ARENT GAY!!1!!!")

Trillian: An all-in-one messenger program for windows only that communicates with all the others (like AIM, Y!M, MSN, and so forth.) You can download Trillian here. The all-in-one messenger for mac is called Fire and is only available for OS X.

twincest: fics wherein Fred and George Weasley have a sexual relationship. Can also be used for Padma/Parvati pairings, though these, like all femslash, is less common.

U

uberauthor: a well-known author.

uberfic: a fic that employs the characters from the original source, but transplants them outside their context. Very much liike an AU, but possibly even more extreme. ("Harrius Potterus is a Roman governmor in Gaul, where he meets Hermione, a former slave who has escaped her captors and is at the mercy of a barbaric Gallic village tyrannically ruled by the evil lord Draco!")

ujournal: found here, ujournal is another variation on livejournal (like deadjournal). The administrators at ujournal have taken the opensource software from livejournal and created their own journaling site. Codes aren't required to get a journal here, for now, but otherwise it's much the same as livejournal.

UST/RST: Unresolved Sexual Tension/Resolved Sexual Tension. Fics are generally believed to be best when filled with UST, because it lends a form of angst to the fic that propels it forward, gives it a goal. RST is considered a kind of fic death wish, and should only really happen at the tail end of a fic. I disagree, but again, that's subjective.

V

vanilla: standard sex. Nothing fancy. Not necessarily only missionary, but without any bondage or power games or role playing or anything like that. Het or slash smut can be vanilla.

veela: a kind of creature in the Harry Potter books. In HP fandom, veelas is also the name for anyone subscribed to the veela inc. mailing list, and also the title used for its mods.

veela inc.: a mailing list for HP fanfic (available here); heavily slash but not exclusively so. Eventually will also be an archive.

vid: a video file created by taking clips from the film (or, in tv fandoms, from episodes) and setting them to music, like a music video. Check out layha's HP music fics.

vidder: a person who creates vids.

W

WIP: Work In Progress. A multi-part fic that is released serially as the parts are written. Often WIPs will be abandoned, much to the chagrin of its readership.

w00t: An expression of joy or exitement. "DV just got updated! w00t!"

Y

Yahoo group: a free mailing list service riddled with ads (available here) that also provides a group with upload space and a webpage. Yahoo groups allow polls, and members can turn off the email function and simply read the posts on the webpage for the group. Many fanfic authors or groups use yahoo groups to give their readers updates on their fics. Examples: Draconian, Veelainc, etc.

Yaoi: pronounced so that it either rhymes with 'joy' or as 'ya-oo-ee'. Yaoi is slash in Japanese. There is a tremendous amount of yaoi art online, a product of Japanese manga and devout Japanese fan girls with remarkable talent. Yaoi has as a trope a dark haired boy and a platinum haired boy in sensitive situations, which is why a lot of non-Potter art is sort of converted into Potter art. It all looks like Harry and Draco, if you squint.

YM: Yahoo Messenger. Another instant messenger (like AIM, MSN, Trillian, Proteus, or Fire)used by people in the fandom to contact each other. You can download it here.

Yuri: femslash. This is a Japanese manga term for femslash. You will often see Yaoi/Yuri warnings on places like ff.net.

The usual ships: Harry/Draco Harry/Ginny Harry/Sirius Harry/Snape Harry/Hermione Harry/Ron Sirus/Remus Snape/Remus Ron/Hermione Draco/Pansy Draco/Ginny Ginny/Hermione Arthur/Lucius Snape/Lucius Narcissa/Lucius Draco/Neville Percy/Oliver Oliver/Marcus James/Lucius James/Sirus James/Lily Fred/George (twincest) Dean/Seamus Draco/Seamus Neville/Percy Harry/Fred/George Harry/Cho Ron/Draco Draco/Hermione Ginny/Draco Snape/Hermione Harry/Justin Finch-Fletchley Pansy/Hermione Pansy/Ginny Narcissa/Snape Pansy/Millicent

Ratings (According to the American Motion Picture ratings system):

(G) General Audience: All ages. This signifies that the film rated contains nothing most parents will consider offensive for even their youngest children to see or hear. Nudity, sex scenes, and scenes of drug use are absent; violence is minimal; snippets of dialogue may go beyond polite conversation but do not go beyond common everyday expressions.

(PG) Parental Guidance Suggested: Some material may not be suitable for children. This signifies that the film rated may contain some material parents might not like to expose to their young children - material that will clearly need to be examined or inquired about before children are allowed to attend the film. Explicit sex scenes and scenes of drug use are absent; nudity, if present, is seen only briefly, horror and violence do not exceed moderate levels.

(PG-13) Parents Strongly Cautioned. Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13. This signifies that the film rated may be inappropriate for pre-teens. Parents should be especially careful about letting their younger children attend. Rough or persistent violence is absent; sexually-oriented nudity is generally absent; some scenes of drug use may be seen; one use of the harsher sexually derived words may be heard.

(R) Restricted-Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian (age varies in some locations). This signifies that the rating board has concluded that the film rated contains some adult material. Parents are urged to learn more about the film before taking their children to see it. An R may be assigned due to, among other things, a film's use of language, theme, violence, sex or its portrayal of drug use.

(NC-17) No One 17 and Under Admitted. This signifies that the rating board believes that most American parents would feel that the film is patently adult and that children age 17 and under should not be admitted to it. The film may contain explicit sex scenes, an accumulation of sexually-oriented language, or scenes of excessive violence. The NC-17 designation does not, however, signify that the rated film is obscene or pornographic.[3][4]
