A flame is a comment or message that is hostile, personally insulting, or intentionally offensive. Common types of flames in fandom are hostile negative feedback on fanworks (as opposed to concrit) and angry comments about participants in debates over topics of controversy.

A flame usually consists of ad hominem attacks and contributes very little to a discussion. Flames may be used as a method of trolling, as they often provoke strong reactions from others.
