Jean Grey is the alter ego of Phoenix and Marvel Girl from the Marvel Comics series The X-Men. She generally appears as a main character in all the X-Men universes such as Marvel Comics: Earth-616, Ultimate X-Men, X-Men: The Animated Series, X-Men: Evolution, Wolverine and the X-Men, and X-Men Movieverse.

Canon

Jean Grey is a mutant born with telepathic and telekinetic powers. Her powers first manifested when she saw her childhood friend being hit by a car.

Jean first appeared as Marvel Girl in X-Men #1 (September 1963).

Famke Janssen plays her in the X-Men Movieverse. Sophie Turner portrays a younger version in the 2016 film X-Men: Apocalypse and its 2019's sequel X-Men: Dark Phoenix.

She appeared in X-Men: The Animated Series voiced by Catherine Disher. In Wolverine and the X-Men she is voiced by Jennifer Hale and in X-Men: Evolution voiced by Venus Terzo. She also appeared in Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends, The Super Hero Squad Show voiced by Hynden Walch, and in the Iron Man: Armored Adventures animated series again voiced by Terzo.

Fandom

Jean Grey, especially as the avatar of Phoenix Force, is a popular and iconic character. She's well known for dying and coming back. Fansites for Jean was fairly easy to find in the late 1990s and early 2000s (Bianca's Ultimate Jean Grey Site being the most popular). Fanworks such as fanart, fanvids, fanfiction, and other works are popular and are produced year after year. Cosplay is also popular - many portray her different incarnations (Marvel Girl, Phoenix, Dark Phoenix, XME, XMM, etc) and costumes. See Jean Grey cosplay at DeviantArt for examples.

The Jean Grey tag at Archive of Our Own has 3,324 works tagged as of May 24, 2019.

Comics

The most popular het pairings in the comics for Jean Grey is Jean/Scott Summers and Jean/Logan Howlett aka Wolverine. A popular femslash pairing for Jean is for her to be with Emma Frost due to their animosity in the comics (generally because of each others romantic interest towards Scott) and Ororo Munroe due to their friendship. To a lesser extent, Jean is shipped with Charles Xavier, Warren Worthington III, Remy LeBeau, Laura Kinney, Hank McCoy, Jubilee, and Wanda Maximoff.

X-Men: Evolution

Jean was a popular character in the series. Despite this, Jean gained a lot of hate in this series, with many non-fans of Jean accusing her as a "Mary Sue" and "bitchy"[1] - thus in many fanworks is portrayed as such and was often bashed in fanfiction.

Jean was mainly shipped with Scott, or Duncan (often as a past/side/background pairing). Jean was actually rarely shipped with Logan - probably due to the age difference. Femslash pairings of Jean/Rogue and Jean/Kitty also appeared.

X-Men Movieverse

Again Jean was mainly shipped with Scott and Logan, otherwise she is also shipped with Ororo and Rogue. Fix-it fics were popular after X-Men: The Last Stand due to the film's take on the Phoenix storyline, often changing it to the more fire-y version of the comics and less of a split personality.

With the release of X-Men Apocalypse, a younger Jean appears and while still shipped with the above (Scott and Logan in particular), fans also started shipping her with Scarlet Witch of Marvel Cinematic Universe, Charles Xavier, Magneto, Quicksilver, and Jubilee. XMA's version of Phoenix is often praised compared to the X3 version, which many disliked.

Wolverine and the X-Men

Jean is mainly shipped with Scott and Logan.

X-Men: The Animated Series

Jean is mainly shipped with Scott.
