Ororo Munroe is the alter ego of Storm from the Marvel Comics series The X-Men, and its related adaptations. She generally appears as a main character in almost all the X-Men universes. She was one of the first black comic characters and the first black female character to have a major role.

History

Storm was one of the first black comic book characters, and the first black female, to play either a major or supporting role in the big two comic book houses, Marvel Comics and DC Comics, which probably attributes to her being one of the more popular and well known X-Women. Within these two companies, her 1975 debut was only preceded by a few male black characters: Gabe Jones, Black Panther, Joe Robertson, Prowler, Falcon, John Stewart, Luke Cage and Blade.

Ororo is popular within X-men fandom and Marvel fandom in general, and is often ranked in fans top ten lists of best X-Men characters[1][2][3].

Canon

Ororo possesses the mutant ability of control of the weather and the power of flight. She also possesses the potential to do magic, as her female ancestors before her.

Ororo first appeared as in Giant Size X-Men #1 (May 1975). Her first ongoing solo comic book series began July 23, 2014.

Comics

Ororo has been apart of all the major Marvel Comics teams, The Avengers, Fantastic Four, and The X-Men. She's also been apart of the Morlocks and Hellfire Club.

X-Men: Evolution

Ororo is one of the original X-Men on X-Men: Evolution, and is a teacher to the younger generation. In this universe, she has a sister and a nephew, Evan Daniels, who joins the X-Men team in the first season. Instead of Ororo, like in the comics, Evan is the one that ends up joining the Morlocks.

X-Men Movieverse

She is portrayed by Halle Berry as an adult and Alexandra Shipp as a younger version in the X-Men Movieverse.

Common Tropes in Fanworks

  • Mundane AU: where she is not a mutant, and meets other characters in a more conventional setting. A variation of this is Still has Powers, usually an AU where mutants are common and accepted, and therefore live more ordinary lives
  • Families of Choice: the X-Men being her found family
  • Crossover: usually with other comics and superhero properties
  • Supporting Character: often a featured secondary character in stories focused on other members of the X-Men
  • Fan Art: Storm is a popular subject for fan artists, many showcasing her weather controlling abilities, or her variety of style interpretations

Discussion

Some fans were disappointed at how underrated and underutilized Storm has been in some adaptations[4], especially the live action films[5]
