Susan Wyllie was a fanartist, poet, filker and fan writer active in a number of fandoms in the 1970s and 1980s. She even created puzzles!

Susan began her involvement in fandom with the Mark Lenard International Fan Club, with her contributions earning her nominations for the AGS Award three years running beginning in 1977 (and a tied first place in 1978). Concurrently she was also part of The Collinsport Call (a Dark Shadows) fan club and The Leonard Nimoy Nuts and Bolts.

Her earliest fanworks appear in 1977, in the zines associated with the various fan clubs she was a member of. She was extremely prolific over the next 7 years, receiving positive responses to her poetry and art especially. She was also the subject, along with another fan writer, of Jean Lorrah's infamous concrit letter in Despatch Issue #35; the letter can be found here and more information about the response to Jean's letter can be found in the A Matter of Principle article.

Susan wrote and drew gen, het and slash content and was a K/S shipper. She was also known for her humorous works as well as the serious ones. After 1984, she appears to have stopped contributing to fanzines - there are no references to her work in zines past this time.

Following a long illness, Susan passed away on July 28, 2014 at the age of 65, [1]

Reviews and Recommendations

Despatch #34 is a showcase for Susan Wyllie, clearly one of the freshest talents around, and a triple-threat: poet, fiction writer, and artist. What an opportunity you had there, and you muffed it! Her comic poem, and her two drawings, are of high quality; I would not have messed with them, any more than you did. I think I might have asked for some elaboration on the quarrel in "Concert on Babel" — something to make the situation come alive. Still, it's a pretty good poem as it - stands, and makes its point clearly. Susan, work on more concrete images for your serious poetry. [2]

...And just what can be said about Susan Wyllie and her puns that hasn't been groaned before? Keep it up, Susan. We masochists love it! [3]

Susan Wyllie has earned second prize for the many hours she has devoted to providing our club with her entertaining poetry, stories and illustrations. Susan's mentioned that her favorite ML character is Aaron Stempel--as many of you can probably tell--and for that reason, Mark thought it would be appropriate to sign her 8x10 picture of Mr. Stempel, "To Susan, from me and Aaron, Love Mark Leonard."

[4]

But easily the best, to me, of the poetry offered was Susan Wyllie's "In Loving Memory." It sings, it flows. It is a joy to the eye and the ear. And the subtle, brilliant understating, of the double entendre of the last line is breathtaking. Forgive me if I seem affected, but "The City on the Edge of Forever" was probably (again, to me) the beat single show of the lot and means a great deal to me. I am so very, very glad that some one else has been able to express that feeling so well...

Reactions and Reviews to Mr.s Darth Vader

I very much enjoyed seeing more of Susan Wylie's "Mrs. Darth Vader" cartoons. Her talent for drawing certainly impresses me. For Instance, her strip on p. 81, we've all seen the gag before (or actually done It in school), but her sense of composition, simple, pleasant style, and even her lettering give the strip a sense of freshness. [6]

I loved all of the "Mrs. Darth Vader" cartoons by Susan - my favorite being the 'obscence phone call' one. [7]

One of my favorite items in MEC was "The Adventures of Mrs. Darth Vader." Never have I seen a running comic like that on SW, and quite an original idea at that. I hope that Susan continues running it. [8]
