Remy LeBeau is the alter ego of Gambit from the Marvel Comics series The X-Men.

Canon

Remy first appeared as in Uncanny X-Men Annual #14 (July 1990) as a cameo and fully in Uncanny X-Men #266 (August 1990). Remy possesses the mutant ability of control and manipulation of potential energy and kinetic energy.

Taylor Kitsch plays him in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which is a part of X-Men Movieverse.

Remy appeared in three animated incarnations of the X-Men: X-Men: The Animated Series (and its sequel X-Men '97), X-Men: Evolution and Wolverine and the X-Men.

Fandom

Remy/Gambit was an extremely popular X-Men character in the 1990s, thanks to both the comics and the animated series. He had several fansites and fanworks archives dedicate to him. He was a central or secondary character in several fics that are now considered fandom classics.

His popularity dwindled somewhat in the 2000s, mostly likely because he was not included as part of the main X-Men team in the X-Men movies that gained popularity at the time. Although, there were still many comics fans devoted to him.

He had another spurt of popularity in 2024 after the release of the X-Men '97 series, for many younger people this was their introduction to the character, and he gained many new fans.

Pairings

Remy is a bit of a little black dress in X-Men fandom, he has been shipped with almost every character he has interacted with, possibly because he can be quite flirty. His most enduring and popular ship is with Rogue, with whom he has had a on-again off-again relationship for several decades in the comics.

Common Tropes in Fanworks

  • Movieverse: many fans were unhappy that Gambit was excluded from most of the X-Men films, so they included him in their fanfiction
  • Mundane AU: where he is not a mutant, and meets other characters in a more conventional setting. A variant is Sill has Powers, usually where mutants are accepted and live more ordinary lives
  • Hurt/Comfort: usually with Remy being the character that is hurt and in need of comfort
  • Friendship: focusing on his friendships with the other X-Men
  • Cats: In the recent comics Remy adopted three cats, Oliver, Lucifer, and Figaro, and some fans like to include them in fanworks
  • Supporting Character: often a featured secondary character in stories focused on other members of the X-Men

Cosplay

Cosplaying Gambit is very popular in the X-Men fandom[1]. The person portraying Gambit is often with someone dressed up as Rogue[2].
