Marvel Cinematic Universe

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe Nick Fury is portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson. First appearance for Nick Fury in the MCU was in Iron Man (2008) where he tries to get Tony Stark to join the Avengers team. He reappears again in Iron Man 2 (2010), Thor (2011), and Captain America: The First Avenger (2011). Fury is prominently featured in the film The Avengers (2012) and later briefly appeared in the second episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. Fury prominently featured in the film Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) and appeared in The Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015).

A younger Nick Fury (still played by Samuel L. Jackson) was a main character in Captain Marvel. His appearance in Captain Marvel opened up new interpretations for fandom, particularly ones focused on him as a 'cat dad' or interacting with Carol Danvers.

Fandom

Pairings

Nick Fury is rarely romantically linked with other characters in fanworks, but when he is it is most often with other S.H.I.E.L.D. agents: Phil Coulson, Maria Hill, Natasha Romanov, and Clint Barton. He is also occasionally shipped with Steve Rogers, Tony Stark, James Rhodes, and with Moira MacTaggert, which is usually a crossover pairing between the MCU and XMFC fandoms even though both characters also exist in Marvel Comics.

Fanon and Tropes

Antagonist

Some fanfiction writers portray Fury as an antagonist to the Avengers. As of October 13, 2021, the AO3 tags "Manipulative Nick Fury" and "Evil Nick Fury" have 133[1] and 21[2] works respectively. For comparison, the Nick Fury character tag has 25,196 works. It is also worth noting that not every Manipulative Nick Fury work portrays the character negatively. Part of the impetus for the Manipulative and/or Villain Nick Fury trope is a scene in the 2012 Avengers film where he motivates the Avengers with a set of Captain America trading cards from a recently deceased Phil Coulson.

The trope isn't uncontroversial and is seen by some as a straightforward example of fandom racism. For one example, see this tag meta by jessicaillinoischicago:

#this is a character that is usually played by white actors #the fact that he's played by a black actor scares some people #and they create shitty headcanons to try to hide their racism because they can't believe a black man can be this intelligent and complicated #without villainizing him #which made people like pierce able to get where they were #no one suspects the nice white men of being evil[3]
