Jane Foster is a character in the Marvel Comics series Thor and part of Thor's supporting cast.

Canon

For the longest time she has been the nurse working with Dr. Donald Blake, Thor's human alter ego. Later, during the second volume of Thor comics, she becomes a doctor herself.

In 2014, Foster was revealed to be deemed worthy to wield Thor's hammer Mjolnir when the former is no longer able, adopting the name of Thor, the "Goddess of Thunder", and joining the Avengers. When wielding Mjolnir, Foster gains all the powers of Thor, including superhuman strength, speed, stamina and durability, flight, and control over lightning. Foster, however, has demonstrated a form of control over Mjolnir that her predecessors lacked, such as changing its trajectory and velocity in mid-throw, and spinning it around her enemies to trap them, abilities neither the original Thor nor any of those aside from Jane have ever been shown capable of. This is not the only time she's become Thor, in a What If? #10 (Aug. 1978) titled "What If Jane Foster Had Found the Hammer of Thor" Jane gains the power of Thor and calls herself Thordis. She eventually gives her power up to Thor but keeps her goddess status since falls in love and later marries Odin.

Jane also appears in comics outside of the main continunity like the Marvel Ultimate Universe and Thor The Mighty Avenger.

Marvel Cinematic Universe

In the Thor films she's an astrophysicist and portayed by Natalie Portman. In the second film, she ends up infected by the Aether.

Other Adaptations

Jane in the The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes cartoon series where she is a paramedic and in Avengers Assemble where she is a cross-dimensional research intern.

Jane Foster is a character that is generally liked. Many fans cherish her especially character traits and quirks; fanon for example cherishes her love for pop tarts, lack of sleep, and love for science. However there are some that dislike Jane - liking her toward a damsel in distress and a weak character.

"Except Jane. I couldn’t stand Jane. She was too much of what I thought of as a ‘damsel in distress’, even though, thinking back on it now, I don’t think she was ever actually in distress in the first movie. ...Jane just wasn’t what I thought of as a ‘strong’ female character. She was no Peggy or Sharon Carter or Maria Hill. She didn’t defeat the villain like Pepper Potts did in IM3. And she certainly wasn’t Natasha Romanov (no one is like Natasha Romanov). She was like Betty Ross; there only to be a love interest for the main character.

Of course she’s not a ‘strong’ character like Peggy Carter or Natasha Romanov.

She’s a scientist. You know what she does have? She has her science, and she has a neverending scientific curiosity.

Jane Foster isn’t strong, not in the way Maria or Natasha or Peggy or Sharon are, because she wasn’t made for that. But that doesn’t make her weak. She is a scientist, and she uses her brains to help out in the ways she can. She isn’t physically strong, but she’s well-rounded in the ways that truly strong characters are.

I’ve been brainwashed into thinking the only strong female characters are the ones with sharp edges who can kill you just by looking at you. That’s not what a strong female character is. Jane Foster is strong, in her own way, and I’m done hating her. We need more female characters like her, not the type to save the day with her brawn, but with her brain."[1]

When casting news was released for Thor: Ragnarok which revealed that Natalie Portman (who portrays Jane) would not appear in the film[2], fans of the character were outraged for yet another disappearance of a female character in the MCU (the first being Betty Ross and later Pepper Potts where CACW revealed she and Tony had broken up.) and Thor would be getting a new [possible] love interest with a new character to the universe Valkyrie. Kevin Feige later confirmed that the two simply broke up and Portman revealed that she was done as Jane[3].
