Bucky/Tony is a pairing of Bucky Barnes (Winter Soldier) and Tony Stark (Iron Man) from the Marvel Universe - especially in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, after Captain America: Winter Soldier's release.

Canon

Comics

Both Tony and Bucky appear in the comics. Their relationship can range from antagonist or friendly, depending on the run or storyline. When they are friendly there are occasionally panels that show Tony fixing Bucky's mechanical arm, a trope that is also often carried over into fanart.

Marvel Cinematic Universe

Tony was introduced to the MCU in Iron Man movies and then starred in The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron. Bucky was introduced to the MCU in Captain America: The First Avenger and then starred in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and was referenced by Sam Wilson to Steve Rogers in Avengers: Age of Ultron. They opposed each other in Captain America: Civil War and it was revealed that the Winter Soldier had killed Tony Stark's parents.

Fandom

The ship is rare outside of the MCU movies. Bucky/Tony started showing up after the release of The First Avenger, most of it being with poly ships. After the release of The Winter Soldier, it became more popular, most of the activity happening on tumblr and AO3. With Captain America: Civil War, the pairing became enemyslash.

As of 2018, there are 4700+ tagged works on AO3.

Common Tropes & Fanon in Fanworks

MCU:

  • Bucky's Arm: Tony fixes Bucky's metal arm, made by Hydra, after Bucky is rescued by Steve. They would bond over it.
  • Thinking The Other Is Dating Steve: Either Tony, Bucky, or both, think that the other is dating Steve Rogers. Causing misunderstandings among the three characters.
  • Futuristic Nerds: Because in Captain America: The First Avenger Bucky dragged Steve to see the fair, which was filled with futuristic technology, much like Disney's Tomorrowland. With this information, Bucky is perceived as someone who would love Star Wars and Star Trek. Something that Tony loves. They would watch one of these movies together either as a date night, or as a get together.
  • "RoboCop:" Tony calls Bucky this in reference to his arm.
  • Tiny Tony and Winter Soldier: Young!Tony, either from the ages 5 to 15, meets the Winter Soldier and leaves quite an impression on him. Can end with him leaving Hydra.
  • Hydra Takes Tony: Hydra takes a Young!Tony to fix the Winter Soldier's arm. Can overlap with the Tiny Tony and Winter Soldier trope.
  • Parent's Murder, Lovers Misunderstandings: Bucky has angst!feels over killing Tony's parents, and thinks Tony hates him for killing them. When the whole time Tony actually loves him.
  • Florist Tony: AU where Tony is a florist and usually paired with Tattoo Artist Bucky.
  • Tattoo Artist Bucky: AU where Bucky is a tattoo artist. Usually paired with Canon Tony, or Mechanic Tony, or Florist Tony.
  • Mafia AU: Either Tony is the head of one Mafia group that is rivals with Cap’s group and is dating his right hand man, Bucky, or Tony is a science teacher that used to be in his father’s/Obadiah’s group but got out. When Bucky is revealed to be in the Mafia, Tony is heart broken and thinks Obadiah sent Bucky to kill him.
  • Hiding From Steve: Set between Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Avengers: Age of Ultron or Captain America: Civil War. Bucky is hiding from Steve in Stark Tower, either while the Avengers are living there and Bucky lives in Tony’s workshop or after Ultron when everyone has moved out. Him and Tony may or may not spark a relationship while Tony keeps Bucky hidden from Steve.
