Magnum, P.I. was a 1980s detective series set in Hawaii and starred Tom Selleck as Thomas Magnum, a Vietnam vet who'd set himself up as a private investigator. A remake series was produced on May 11, 2018.[1][2]
Canon Overview
Characters
- Thomas Sullivan Magnum IV
- T.C. (Theodore Calvin)
- Orville Wilbur Richard "Rick" Wright
- Jonathan Quayle Higgins III
Canonical Crossovers
The show featured two-part crossover episodes with other crime shows of the day, including Simon & Simon and Murder She Wrote.[citation needed]
There were also nods to Hawaii 5-0, such as when Higgins calls Five-O to report a theft in Season 1, Episode 5, "Thank Heavens for Little Girls, and Big Ones Too", . Or Magnum gets on the radio pretending he's with the police and asks: "Billy, this is McGarrett of Five-O. Is David Norman armed?" In in Season 1, Episode 6, "Skin Deep"[3]
Robin's Identity
Like Charlie on Charlie's Angels, Robin Masters' face was never shown. As the series went on, there were increasing numbers of hints that Higgins, not "Robin", is the real author and owner of the estate. In the series finale, Higgins finally admits this but then later claims to have been lying. No definitive proof is ever given in canon.
Fandom Overview
The series' fandom is relatively small, with only 134 works on AO3. Slaah ships vary between Higgins/Magnum (33 works), TC/Magnum (7 Works) and TC/Rick. This might be expected considering the majority of the fandom took place before the world wide web was introduced. Although, it did have some small popularity in online spaces because there was a slash focused mailing list at one point. The majority of the early sharing of fanworks seems to have taken place in zines, either Magnum focused ones or multi-media zines.
The fandom focuses much more on the 2018 series reboot, and the Higgins/Magnum pairing. On AO3, there are 1858 works.

from The Silken Thread That Binds Us: "Another interesting thing in this zine is an illustration of a bar, where Kirk, McCoy and Scotty are having a drink, and if you notice the other patrons, you will find Battlestar Galactica folk, Magnum P.I., I think someone is from Blake's Seven (not sure though) and the bartender is Sam from Cheers. There is no mention of these characters that I saw, just added to the background of the illustration."[note 1]
