Some Context and History

Once upon a time, several years ago, three things happened. One, we inherited a couple of Starsky and Hutch pieces from a friend who decided to get out of fandom. Two, a few other friends kept asking us where they could find zines that took submissions of stories from their favorite cops and spies shows. That kept us scurrying, trying to send them addresses of zine editors that handled that kind of story, for very few zines of this nature were being done at that time. So, three, we said to ourselves, "Heck — why can't we put out a cops & spies zine?"

Thus COPS AND R0BBERS AND SPIES...OH MY! was born.

...Unfortunately, the gestation period was much longer than expected. We had a timetable all planned out. Writers were contacted for submissions, artists lined up, and our work schedule was adjusted to make time to work on it in addition to the other zines we put out. It looked good on paper, but what was planned didn't come to be.

All it took was a few artists out of many contacted who missed the deadline set up to set the avalanche of delays in motion. Without all artwork in hand, the start of typing got delayed. With typing delayed, the time available to type was delayed even further, as we had other zines to get out. Some art never showed up at all, the artists so swamped with work to do for other editors that they did not have the time to tell us they couldn't do it. Some writers pulled stories because we were taking so long.

And then... our typewriters started breaking down — simultaneously. Letters broke off, clutches went out; even now, some of the letters are pretty iffy.

On the other hand...submissions of stories kept coming in. We've ended up with a zine twice as long as expected. In fact, at one point we were going to split it into two issues. But we bit the bullet and plowed on ahead, the result you now hold in your hands.

More issues in the future? We haven't ruled them out. It depends on the kindness and patience of contributors — and the comments and quantity of you readers. We'll keep the door open. Hopefully, if there is a second issue, we can keep it to a more reasonable length of only 110 pages — barring greater demand.

Now's the time to give our typewriters a rest, and for you to exercise yours. Comments, please! Or if you want to be contacted about contributing to future issues, please let us know.
