Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Adaptation

Known as one of the "greatest fan films ever made," Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Adaptation is a shot for shot remake of the 1981 Indiana Jones movie. Eric Zala, Jayson Lamb, and Chris Strompolos started creating the film just a year after the release of the original movie, and continued for seven consecutive summers, recreating every single scene in their hometown in Mississippi. After seven years, the production seemed nearly complete, except for the last scene, which including an exploding airplane---something the friends simply couldn't pull off successfully. They called off production, calling it as complete as it could be. Fourteen years later, they decided to premiere the production and sell the rights to Paramount Pictures.[1]

As depicted in the documentary Raiders! The Story of the Greatest Fan Film Ever Made, the childhood friends reunited to finally finish the airplane scene after three decades. The budget for this was significantly higher, as the crew of the fan film attempted, and succeeded, at getting professional help, which included a professional camera crew, stunt doubles, and an airplane created specifically for their purpose. The film was finished in 2016 after nearly thirty years of filming.
