Joni Wagner is a prolific zine fanartist in several fandoms.
Wagner was introduced to fandom at age 16 in 1973 at Starcon in Detroit. It was there she talked to Sharon Ferraro, who was selling zines. Wagner told Ferraro that she could draw, and the two exchanged addresses. [1]
She won a 1981 Fan Q Award for Favorite Single Artwork.
Wagner published in Facets #4.
A 1982 Bio
In 1982, she was nominated for a FanQ award and submitted the following bio to The Annual Fan Q Awards Nominations Booklet:
"Joni Wagner will have been in fandom for 9 (eek!) years as of this coming fall. She was introduced to fandom by Sharon Ferraro and started out illoing almost exclusively Trek. As Trek interest began waning, lo and behold, Star Wars was viewed on the horizon. She's done a few pieces here and there for various other fandoms, but Star Wars is her big "thing" right now. Works have appeared in MENAGERIE, WARPED SPACE, SKYWALKER, FACETS, SYNDIZINE, PEGASUS, MOS EISLEY TRIBUNE, SHOWCASE, HALKAN COUNCIL, etc...This past year she's been working and putting a portfolio together in hopes of "striking out" and getting a job in the field at summer's end . She's illoed recently for fandoms in Trek, Star Wars, Raiders, Time After Time, etc. The illo representing her talent is entitled "Beat It, Junior" (erroneously titled "Get Away, Kid") and is from PEGASUS 5."

from Rising Star -- "The back cover by Joni Wagner is worth the price of the zine by itself -- it's so ALIVE. I caught myself wondering what the Captain has to be so smug about." [4]

1979

foldout Star Wars poster from Warped Space #40
original artwork used for the cover of Moonbeam #5/6
1980
from Twin Suns #1 -- Regarding the front cover art by Joni Wagner, and a very similar interior piece by Martynn, the editor wrote: "I commissioned both artists, asking for a 'Janus head' for a logo for the 'zine. Martynn apologized saying she was sorry she could only come up with silhouettes (!!!) and Joni had not seen or heard of Martynn's piece when she turned in the cover. Great minds run in the same trench."
from Twin Suns #1
portrays the original character, Kylie Metik, from Skywalker #4, for the story Foreshadows -- "Is it just me or does Kylie resemble Sigourney Weaver? [5]
"Joni Wagner did a fine job of the illo (even if my first impression was of a young, pretty Nancy Reagan as opposed to the anorexic reality)." [6]from Obsc'zine #4, Star Wars foldout: this illo inspired another fan to write a story (featuring tentacles!) -- see "A Matter of Healing"
from Felgercarb #7 -- "I still love this art - it's so simple and elegant. Joni Wagner still remains one of my favorite fannish artists. I own a number of pieces by Joni, and while I may consider getting rid of parts of my fannish collection, I have never parted with any of her art.[7]
from Facets #2, winner of a Fan Q Award -- "The Joni Wagner drawing of Han on page 24 is spectacular! My blessings on STARLOG for the original photo. Joni is definitely one of the best SW artists there is." [8]
"Without contest the most breathtaking piece, of art in the entire zine is that absolutely stunning Han of Joni's that faces my poem. Joni has captured the very essence of the character as he appears in "Empire" — the depth of honesty and love to those piercing eyes and the softly ironic upturn to the full lips. It's got to be one of the best of Joni's pieces!" [9]from Kraith Collected #6
Personal Log #1
1981
from Pegasus #5
from Pegasus #5, the fold-out was erroneously titled "Get Away, Kid" -- it's actual title is "Beat It, Junior"
from Pegasus #5
from Guardian #3
"Innocence For Sale" centerfold in Syndizine #2 -- "One thing I do remember about the Mos'Eastly con was (heh, heh) "Innocence for Sale." That tiny reproduction doesn't do justice to Joni's wonderful work of art (which always seemed to have at least two or three Fen clustered around it). The girl is obviously talented, and you were lucky to get so many illustrations from her for the zine." [12]
"And there was a Luke Skywalker called Innocence for Sale, equally gorgeous - no, perhaps more so [than a Han Solo art titled "Smuggled Goods"]. I ended up losing the bid on that, but made a friend with the person who did get it. :) [13]from Warped Space #46, from the story Ships in the Night -- "Joni Wagner's illos for "Ships in the Night" were very good. Her style is so natural. It looks effortless but it must take a lot of effort to achieve it. I enjoyed the story, too. The love scene with the mental as well as physical contact was well done; but what energy and endurance Luke and Cori had! Ah well, perhaps I'm just a wee bit envious!" [14]
"Joni Wagner's art for the story, Ships in the Night is perfectly executed. She does a great Luke." [15]from Warped Space #46 -- "The final item, for those readers who sent in an age statement, is Ships in the Night. Readers who felt a bit cheated at the end of 'Marketable Commodity' in Pegasus #4 will be more than satisfied by this lovely return engagement between Luke and Cori Beckett. It is lyrical, sensual, erotic in the highest degree, yet so skillfully written and tasteful that there is not a hint of the pornographic in it. The characters are real people, totally believable, and the authors resist the temptation to cheapen them by tacking on a contrived and happy ending. This story should be required reader for every aspiring writer of erotica, as an example of How To Do It Right. It is complemented by illos in Joni Wagner's best style, although the artist seems to have been inhibited by Lucasfilm's recent pronouncements into making the illos a bit more PG than the story really deserves. [16]
from Warped Space #46
1982
1983
from Kessel Run #3 -- "Joni Wagner's Leia on page 140 is beautiful. The only problem I see is in the areas where she crosshatches. This technique is not one of her strengths. However, this flaw is not any big deal and would only be noticed by a fuss-budget like me." [17]
"...a lovely illustration by Joni Wagner whose Leia looked like a determined idealistic 16 year old. [18]
1984
from Guardian #6
1988
"Wanna Walk on My Beach?" (Magnum PI)
2010s
"Wonder Twins, Powers Activate" (The title "is a goofy 1980's Saturday morning cartoon reference that kept going through my head while I was drawing this.") [19]
"They Grow Up So Fast" (11"x14" pencil on bristol board) (Harry Potter)
"It Ain't the Years..." (pencil on bristol board) (Indiana Jones)
