Fan Comments
She participated as an actor in multiple SHareCon plays, sometimes as Huggy Bear or other characters and you could rely on Lucy to pull out the stops in her performance and have everyone in stitches. One year at SHareCon when I asked her if she'd be Huggy Bear in the latest rendition of Baaaad SH Theater, she showed up in a purple sequined zoot suit for the performance. The place broke up before she ever said a word.
At 2016 SHareCon, a friend was supposed to room with Lucy but wasn't able to attend at the last minute. We had a new fan coming to the con, who was male, which was a little unusual. We'd had men come to the con in the past, but they were usually husbands of attendees, not fans of the guys. He arrived late Friday due to cancelled flights. On Sunday, near the end of the con, Lucy thanked me for assigning her such a lovely roommate. I had no idea what she was talking about. It seems the hotel had put him in Lucy's room since they had assigned the room he was supposed to have to someone who was not part of the con and they were out of space. I was dumbfounded. Lucy had roomed with this young man for two days and nights and never said a word to me. When I asked her why she thought I would assign her a roommate, and one of the opposite sex, without even asking her, she said she assumed I was trying to help since her planned roommate couldn't come. And she loved rooming with our young fan. She said he was the perfect roommate: funny, polite, neat, and even made his own bed! That was Lucy. Willing to assume the best of everyone and make the best of any situation.
Lucy was a registered nurse in real life, so when I needed medical advice in crafting the story Do I Still Love You, Rosey Malone, I asked Lucy, telling her I needed a serious gunshot injury, but not fatal or permanently disabling, and how quick could I get my character out of the hospital? I could not have written that story without her help. I've heard other fans report she also helped them with story research.
In later years, Lucy owned and ran a television and movie studio, and had hoped to write and sell projects that might use Paul or David in them. While that never came to pass, she was featured in several reality shows and produced other episodes and even movies that used her studio to film in such as Untold Stories of the ER. She was a member of the Screen Actors Guild and acted in some of the episodes and was a medical consultant in multiple productions. Her studio was used for films like Men in Black 3 (2012), The Dark Knight Rises (2012) and Mystery ER (2007). She also was a producer and medical consultant on the movie, Demon Under Glass, that Garret Maggart from The Sentinel was in and several others. She was also very involved in the Richard Burgi Fan Club. [1]
After the Paul Muni Special in 1985, Lucy was in the car with fans Linda McGee and Nancy Kippax on a trip to DC to see the sights. They had a flat tire during the trip and a man stopped to help them. Lucy later married him. [2]
While not unexpected, I’m still so sad to learn she’s passed. Like so many others, I loved spending time with Lucy at cons — such a fun, loving person. I also wanted to add to her incredible list of accomplishments and contributions to our fandom — Lucy was one of the writers as well as just a behind the scene mover and shaker for the SH Slash Virtual Season project. A wonderful person and a huge loss. [4]
Thank you for telling us about all the amazing things Lucy did, all the positive waves she created in fandom. I never met her or corresponded with her, but I saw a lot of her accomplishments over the decades. Half You Half Me was in the first batch of zines I read. Condolences to all who's lives she touched. [5]
I'm so sad to hear this news. Lucy was a good friend of mine for many years. I published a lot of her stories in SH and Wiseguy fandom and Sentinel too. We roomed together numerous times at MediaWestCon over the years and I loved participating with her in the SHareCon plays. I also got to stay with her at her lovely home in Lake Elsinore and we went to see Richard Burgi, who played Jim Ellison, in The Sentinel together too. [6]
Sad news. Serve and Protect is an incredibly complex and nuanced story obviously produced by someone with deep compassion and understanding of the human condition. And one hell of a writer. [7]
I only knew Lucy from 2 SHareCons. Her portrayal of Huggy Bear was hilarious. Petite Lucy dressed in a purple pantsuit with a huge matching hat, sashaying into the room is a great memory. [8]
What a loss to fandom. I remember good times with Lucy at many MediaWest Cons, and she was always generous with her medical knowledge to all us authors who wanted to creatively maim our characters. A sweet, gracious lady and a wonderful author. ❤ [9]
Since I hadn't been to Media in the last few years, Lucy and I lost track of one another. So sorry to hear of her passing. I first met Lucy in The Sentinel fandom and when we found out we had Starsky and Hutch in common we always hung out at Media West. I will have to go and look for some of her stories. She was a wonderful person and a fine author. The last couple of years has been sad with the loss of many amazing fannish friends. 😢[10]
So sad to hear this news. I loved all of Lucy's stories, but To Protect and Serve and Ninety-nine Miles From LA were my favorites. Such a talented and amazing writer. Our Starsky and Hutch fandom has lost another great one. Condolences to all her family and friends for their loss. [11]
