T'Challa is the alter ego of the Black Panther in Marvel Comics, as well as in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He has enhanced physical abilities thanks to the effects of the heart-shaped herb, and a suit made out of vibranium that can absorb kinetic energy.

Canon

Black Panther was the first black superhero to appear in mainstream American comics. He debuted in Fantastic Four #52 (July 1966). In the MCU, he was portrayed by by the late actor Chadwick Boseman.

Comics

MCU

T'Challa made his first MCU appearance in Captain America: Civil War in 2016, as the son of King T'Chaka of Wakanda. After T'Chaka was killed in a terrorist attack, T'Challa spent much of the film pursuing Bucky Barnes, who he believed to be responsible for his father's murder. T'Challa ultimately discovered that the Helmut Zemo had killed his father, but decided not to kill Zemo, stating, "Vengeance has consumed you ... I am done letting it consume me."[1]

T'Challa's first solo movie was Black Panther (2018), set one week after the events of Civil War. In Black Panther, T'Challa returned home to Wakanda to take his place as Wakanda's king, successfully defending his rule from a challenge by M'Baku. Not long afterwards he discovered that he had a first cousin, Erik "Killmonger" Stevens, who had been born and raised in California. Erik defeated T'Challa in ritual combat to claim the throne of Wakanda, throwing him from Warrior Falls.

T'Challa was found barely alive by the Jabari tribe, and restored to health using the heart-shaped herb. With the help of his friends and allies, he was able to thwart Erik's plans to use Wakanda's resources to start an armed uprising around the world. He then decided to use Wakanda's resources to help others by creating humanitarian outreach and trade initiatives.

On 28 August 2020, actor Chadwick Boseman, age 43, passed away due to complications from stage IV colon cancer. This came as a great shock to the public, as Boseman had never spoken publicly of his cancer diagnosis or any life-threatening health issues.[2] In response, artists created art in tribute of Boseman's life—many referencing his iconic role as T'Challa.

Some people (including fans) who had initially criticized Boseman's appearance when photos of him appearing extremely thin, weakened and muscleless (in contrast to his final images in Black Panther) behind the scenes and making off of the film were released, deleted their posts with criticism or recanted. At that time, her cancer diagnosis was still a mystery, but treatment had already started and very few film crew members knew the actor's personal reality. However, many fans criticized those who sneered at Boseman's appearance, claiming that "cancer or not, actors should be given more respect."[citation needed]
