Hela is a character from the Marvel Comics series Thor based off the Norse Mythology goddess Hel.

Hela first appeared in Journey into Mystery #102 (March 1964).

Hela was born in Jotunheim, the land of the giants. She is the child of Loki (albeit a different incarnation who died during a previous Asgardian Ragnarok) and the giantess Angrboða. Odin appoints her as the Goddess of the Dead, giving her rulership over the dead in the realms of Hel and Niflheim, although Hela often tried to expand her power to the dead who dwell in Valhalla as well. These attempts often brought Hela into conflict with Odin and Thor.

Hela first appears in Thor: Ragnarok within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, portrayed by Cate Blanchett. As the first born child to Odin, Hela served as the commander of Asgard's armies during his conquests of the Nine Realms. She is Odin's only known daughter in the Thor Movieverse, and the All-father never bothered to tell his sons Thor and Loki about her before it was too late to prevent the return of their sister.

Other Adaptations

Hela also appeared in Marvel's Avengers Assemble, The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, and Hulk vs Thor.

Hela is an enemy of Thor; most pairings involving her are enemyslash.
