Canon

Comics

Valkyrie first appeared in the comics: The Avengers #83 (December 1970).

Marvel Cinematic Universe

Valkyrie first appears in Thor Ragnarok as Scrapper 142, a bounty hunter on Sakaar. She is revealed to be the last surviving Valkyrie. After Hela massacred her comrades, Valkyrie left Asgard and eventually befriends Hulk who had landed there. She is initially unwilling to help Thor return to their home, but does so eventually.

MCU

Prior to the release of Thor Ragnarok, the comics version of Valkyrie had appeared in fanworks set in the Marvel Comics and Marvel Cinematic Universes. Fans reacted very positively to Tessa Thompson's depiction of Valkyrie. Immediately following Thor Ragnarok, Valkyrie was shipped with Loki and Thor.

While Valkyrie was confirmed to be bisexual by Tessa Thompson, the scene confirming this ended up on the cutting room floor. There are several fanworks pairing Valkyrie with her girlfriend, a fellow Valkyrie who many fans believe saved her from Hela. Fics pairing Valkyrie with other characters, male and female, sometimes refer to the loss of her former lover.

Interactions on social media, between Tessa Thompson and Captain Marvel actress Brie Larson, led many fans to begin shipping Carol Danvers/Valkyrie despite their lack of interaction in the film Avengers: Endgame.

The announcement of the fourth Thor film, Thor: Love and Thunder, brought more fans to ship Valkyrie/Jane Foster, since Natalie Portman and her character Jane Foster will be returning to the movieverse and Valkyrie will be looking for her Queen of Asgard.
