The Defenders is a Marvel Comics series of a group of "outsider" superheroes.

Its original incarnation was led by Doctor Strange and included the Hulk, Namor, and the Silver Surfer. They first appeared as The Defenders in Marvel Feature #1 (Dec. 1971).

Dr. Strange and the Hulk are the most constant members along with a number of other Marvel Characters such as Valkyrie, Nighthawk, Hellcat, the Gargoyle, Beast, Hellstorm, and Luke Cage, and a large number of temporary members. (For more names, check out Wikipedia's List of Defenders members.)

The latest team (under the comic book title, The Fearless Defenders) centers on a new team of Valkyrior, led by Valkyrie and Misty Knight. Annabelle Riggs, Dani Moonstar, Hippolyta, Clea, Elsa Bloodstone, Ren Kimura and Nova. However the series was canceled due to low ratings.

Other Adaptions

The Defenders have appeared in the animated series The Super Hero Squad Show and Avengers Assemble. They were mentioned in the Spider-Man: The Animated Series.

In November 2013, Disney and Marvel announced that a Defenders live-action TV series will air on Netflix which would star Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage after each character's series aired. Each series would be set inside the Marvel Cinematic Universe, much like Agent Carter and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D..[1]

With The Fearless Defenders, many fans appreciated the all-female cast.[2][3][4] Others especially appreciated the new character Annabelle Riggs,[5] a lesbian character. Tumblr often reposted scans of the comic and reblogged its posters, others posted reviews of its issues.

Once the Daredevil TV series was released and fans started writing fanfiction, many started adding futurefics which brought the future MCU's Defenders team together in the fanworks, especially Jessica Jones and Luke Cage.
