The Annex: X-Files Novel Archive (short "The Annex") is an archive for novel-length X-Files fanfic. Novel length is defined as "stories and compiled series that are 200K or larger"[1] and the 200K refers to the file size and not the word count, as was common in these days.

The archive offered a few extra features. Stories with book covers and separate introductions got their own story page and the archive offered resources for authors who would like to commission a book cover for their story.

Authors could offer their readers "Collector's Editions" because "Most people print out long stories and they really appreciate not having to fix the formatting or waste ink printing out identical introduction/disclaimers every few pages."[1] For an author calling something a collector's edition meant that they compiled the story themselves and took out unnecessary things like newsgroup headers and sigs and they polished the formatting."[1]

The Annex hosts 468 X-Files novels. The stories are sorted alphabetical by title with 50 stories on each page except the last, by author, by genres like adventure or crossover, and by focus on story or X-File.

The page is a member of the X-Files Fanfic Webring. The Annex is still online, but has not been updated since 2002.

A Very Early Description and Review

From around 1998 (?):

Well, this feature is a special one. I'm very happy to highlight the efforts of someone all of us in the XF fanfic community owe an enormous debt to. Natasha was one of those brave souls who stepped forward in 1996 to provide a home for all the fanfic stored in Vincent Juodvalkis' original Gossamer archive when he had to close it. Nat took on the task and then went a step further by developing the story classification system that so many of us depend on now.

Here are Nat's comments about her work on Gossamer and the classifications:

It was Vincent who suggested that whoever took up where he left off consider adding classifications. It's impossible to please everyone, but overall I think the Gossamer system has worked out well. With the archives about to hit the *eight thousand*story mark, I can't imagine how we could manage without some kind of classification system.
The database makes it possible to use macros and scripts to generate the html pages and offer a search engine. It would be too time consuming to offer such a variety of cross listings if all the work was done by hand. The Soulmates Eternal Archive is a shining example of how a specialty site can utilize gossamer's database and macros to a slightly different end.

Since leaving Gossamer last year, Nat has stayed very active in the community with her archive, the annex and with her behind-the-scenes work helping other webmistresses with their own archives.

As a matter of fact, the Feature Archive page was originally Nat's idea! She saw it as a way of focussing more attention on the specialty archives and thought that I should do the job. She's real good at finding things for people to do, let me tell you.... [VBG]

After retiring from Gossamer I kicked around for a couple of months before settling on the idea of doing a novel archive. I missed playing around with a site, but wanted to find a niche where I wouldn't be overwhelmed by the number of new stories each week. I'm enjoying being able to give the novels and authors more personal attention and actually having time to *read*the stories rather than just archiving them. [g]
The authors have been wonderful and more than willing to do a little extra work to make their novels shine. Many authors are providing a 'clean copy' that is ready to be printed out and bound. A growing number of novels also feature articles and artistic covers. With a click or two of the mouse and a good printer, you can have a professional looking fanfic novel to collect and enjoy.

about ME? Oh man..there isn't much to tell. I know you hear that a lot but it's true. I'm in my mid-thirties, have a full-time job and a generally wonderful life. I had just started watching the xf when I came online about four years ago and I stumbled upon atxc and decided to hang around... and here I am!
Finally, I have my own little Natasha tribute. A little over a year ago, this page was just quietly sitting over here in Geocities getting a meager 30 or so hits a day. One day, Nat mentioned that she wanted a more comprehensive list of archive links for Gossamer. I mentioned my little page (I *think*it was still one page back then) and she started linking to it from Gossamer's front page and the stories pages. Well, my hit counter had never seen that much action before and now the specialized archives page alone averages 180 hits a day! Thanx, Nat :) [2]

The Last Update

I know, I know. It's been a long time since the last update.

We apologize. Life Happened. As the members of the Annex mailing list knew from the start of this year (hint, hint :), it's been a looooong year. What has occupied us since May is house-hunting and moving into our first house. Our first house that then flooded into the finished basement where we stored many precious things. Flooded Three Times. The house has smelled like wet cat since we moved in.

Enough of the woe. The stories we present for this update are stories that came to us completely ready to be uploaded. If you are an author wondering where your story is, fear not. We have it and we are working on reformatting it. We NEED files as text-only, ATTACHED as a separate file to the e-mail you send us. Sometimes, I can tell the author tried to attach a story, but for some reason, the story still shows up in the e-mail body instead. I've had a lot of success with authors sending me zip files of their stories. A zip file kind of guarantees that the story is attached and not in the e-mail body.

If you have sent me your story and still do not see it here, feel free to try sending it again as an attachment. Otherwise, please be patient as we work through the backlog. We love you, we want to archive your story, but we need time to get back on track. As we get stories up, let us know if everything looks OK. We're moving kinda fast when we find time to archive. Thanks!

In other (badish) news...we are going to have to move the Annex by January 15. Simplenet has been kind, but the Yahoo! buyout and subsequent billing changes are forcing us to seek out more reasonable rates. Luckily, Mr. Annex has lots of friends with ISPs, so we we'll have somewhere to go.

Dustjackets

The latest additions to the archive, last update in 2002.
As you browse the dustjackets, you can assume the author created their own covers unless otherwise noted. If you would like to have a cover but would rather not do it yourself, you might ask one of the many talented XF artists to make one for you or let you use some of their work. Many of them have graciously provided covers for various novels. The X-Ville Art Gallery, The Haven and E's X-Page are great places to visit if you'd like to see some collages. Gossamer Birdfeeder and frogdoggie's site also have art galleries...

Please note, the preferred width for a cover is 250 pixels, although there are some exceptions. When you have a dustjacket ready, send us the picture as a .gif or .jpg file if possible. We can handle a few other formats so let us know if that's a problem and we'll try and work something out. We do prefer the covers to be suitable for all ages to view.

Authors are welcome to add covers and introductions anytime after a story has been posted. Also, if an author adds to or expands an existing story, s/he should feel free to send any updates. [4]
