Letters of Transit - The Collector's Edition is an 14-part X-Files story by Loch Ness. It is a pastiche-type fusion with the classic film Casablanca.

A sequel, called Letters of Transit II - Marisa based on the 1940 Alfred Hitchcock movie, Rebecca. had been teased by the author, but it seems like only a preview chapter had been ever released.

Summary

It's 1999-- The Date has come and gone, the "Project" is underway and deadly bees have been unleashed on North America. With the world coming apart and people scrambling to get away from the swarm. Mulder faces fateful decisions about his own role in events to come-- and about Scully.

Reactions and Reviews

It doesn't get more classic than this. "Letters of Transit" is something of a post-Colonization arc story, but set to the tune of the film, "Casablanca." It features strong characterization, great use of secondary characters and a wonderful interpretation of the mytharc. Oh, and did I mention the MSR?? All in a concise, complete and succinct package of wonderful and imaginative writing. [1]

I think I tried Loch Ness's "Letters of Transit" once and had a rather blah~ reaction to it, which was odd as I love "Casablanca" and can recite lengthy passages from the movie almost verbatim. For some reason, I just couldn't get my head wrapped around the whole idea of Mulder-as-Rick. And Pendrell was too wimpy a romantic adversary IMHO. [2]

The cross-over that most surprised me has to be Letters of Transit by Loch Ness. Post-Project apocolypse crossed with Casablanca? I doubted, but read, and wow, it works. [3]

Trivia

  • since Pendrells official first name "Sean" wasn't known until 1998, the author called him "Ted"
  • one of the many XF fics from the 1990s that features a Sarah McLachlan song mention, here Hold On from her 1993 album Fumbling Towards Ecstasy
