Sarah McLachlan is a Canadian singer-songwriter active since 1987.

In the 1990s, a lot of fan work, especially fan vids from different fandoms were set to McLachlan's songs. There have been so many works based on McLachaln's music, that it became a trope. Some of her songs were also used for filk.

Fan Comments

1999

I enjoyed [Sileya's stories] very much - besides being a writer of some of my favourite Voyager couples, she's also a Sarah McLachlan fan, and her "Sarah" series of stories are really lovely, lyric-inspired pieces. Go and give them a try.[1]

Completely inappropriate songs in songfic: Fraser has never heard of Macy Gray. Ray Kowalski thinks Sarah McLachlan needs to get laid. Hey, I'll be the first to admit that I think Melissa Etheridge's latest is perfect for Jim. But Jim doesn't listen to Melissa Etheridge! [2]

2000

Mulder has never listened to Sarah MacLachlan in his life. Thusly, it would never occur to him to quote song lyrics to Scully, saying "This is how I've always felt!" Not even if they ended up in a vanilla scented bath together. [3]

Each time a Sarah McLachlan song plays, chug it down... [4]

A terrific song choice for the character of Kate, and the feel of Sarah McLachlan always works for me with the Buffy/Angel universe. [5]

Music. I absolutely need music to write. When Napster closes down, I don't know what I'm going to do. When writing smut, I listen to things like Pulp, Portishead, Moby, Bis, Radiohead, and the guilty pleasure of some old Chris Isaak. Angst is all about Sarah McLachlan (trite, perhaps, but there's a reason why so many writers love her), Grant Lee Buffalo, a little bit of Janis Ian and Simon & Garfunkel, and my beloved REM. I'm also a big fan of Beth Orton. Music creates atmosphere, helps me get into the scene. [6]

Is a song by Loreena McKinnett or Sarah MacLachlan sung during the story?

By Uhura?
By Kirk or Spock?
To the other?
In public?
By Kirk AND Spock?
To each other?

Final plea - Sarah McLachlan (or however you spell it). No more. Please... [8]

2002

Part of the kick of this one was the sheer unexpectedness of it--it was a mail-in vid by an unknown vidder, wasn't on the playlist, used an overly familiar Sarah McLachlan song that's deeply associated with Due South, etc. And, oh my god, the entire room fell dead silent after the first thirty seconds and just drank it in, stunned. This was brilliantly different, and heartbreaking, using clips that few other vidders have used, and in a combination that was utterly fresh, and used--wait for it--stills. Stills, my god. With beautiful dissolves in between. [9]

2009

I first got into fandom at the innocent age of 14, with The X-Files; thankfully none of my early titled-after-Sarah-McLachlan-songs stories were ever posted. [10]
