User talk:Rossi
Hello! If you're having trouble with signatures being left off of talk page comments (I noticed this happened to your initial edit on Ellakbhesse's talk page) then Ellakbhesse reports that using ~~~~ instead of -- seems to be more reliable, for now at least. Regardless, nice to make your acquaintence and happy editing! -- Quaelegit (talk) 08:50, 16 December 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for the assist! I should have remembered the ~~~~ myself since I do a lot of work on my RP's Wiki, but TBH, I forget to "sign" most of my stuff. Nice to meet you also! Rossi (talk) 14:34, 16 December 2022 (UTC)
- No problem! I forget a lot of stuff too (and have gotten some very helpful reminders on my talk page in the past, so now I try to pay it forward :P). I see you've been add the tildes to some of your edit summaries too -- unfortunately wiki formatting doesn't apply to edit summaries, so no need to add them there (though it's also not a problem to have them, as far as I know). The tilde trick is mostly useful for talk pages. 03:34, 2 January 2023 (UTC)
- (Also unrelated, but I see you've added a TON of content about X-men fanworks and awards! I'm excited to go read it!) -- Quaelegit (talk) 03:34, 2 January 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks. :) Obviously I'm an old comics fanficcer and wanted to share my knowledge while I still remember it. ;) Rossi (talk) 18:59, 2 January 2023 (UTC)
a note on categories on fan pages
Hi! Just for future reference, date categories should not be added to pages about fans: Help:Categorising_Guidelines#More_on_Adding_Date_Categories. Category:Fanfiction should only be used for pages about individual fics or fic series. Although there was some talk about creating more subcategories for different types of fan creators (Category talk:Fans), I believe the consensus was not to have a category for fanfic writers.--aethel (talk) 23:42, 17 February 2023 (UTC)
Popping in to say that the same also applies to fandoms, characters, and companies; they should not have dates either. Pinky G Rocket (talk) 22:30, 23 March 2023 (UTC)
- Not being snarky, but when is it okay to use dates? Also, most of those I adjusted today were already there, just changing categories already there to something more general. Rossi (talk) 22:41, 23 March 2023 (UTC)
- Dates generally are there for fanwork pages, so fics, fic series, fanart, as well as events like conventions. For example, I've just added in Category:2019 Fanart to File:Ahadi by ale tie.jpg of Ahadi, but I wouldn't put Category:1994 on his character page. That kinda thing. It's not made especially clear tbf I'll admit, but yeah. It's a new effort so I think folks are still getting to grips with it. -- OfMonstersAndWerewolves (talk) 12:46, 24 March 2023 (UTC)
categorizing archive pages
The "Fanart" and "Fanfiction" categories are for pages that are individual works of fanart or fanfiction. Archives of fanart and/or fanfiction should be in the Archives category instead. For archives of fanart, Category:Art Communities and Galleries can be used in addition.--aethel (talk) 00:10, 25 March 2023 (UTC)
- I found and fixed some more nonfanwork pages in the "Fanart" and "Fanfiction" categories; I created Category:Fanart Challenges, and other fanart-related pages can be added to Category:Visual Art or Category:Art Communities and Galleries.--aethel (talk) 06:21, 30 December 2023 (UTC)
- Don't forget that Category:Fanart is only for pages about individual works of fanart and that other pages about fanart generally should be categorized under Visual Art instead. I found and fixed a few more pages that were incorrectly categorized recently.--aethel (talk) 17:31, 10 March 2024 (UTC)
make categories minor edits
Hi, I was hoping you could click "This is a minor edit" box when adding things like categories, it just makes it easier to exclude them from the recent changes page. Thanks. -- Kingstoken (talk) 10:11, 5 April 2023 (UTC)
Fanlore Bingo 2023
Hi Rossi, thank you for joining Bingo this year, we have delicious snacks!
I think this is the badge you've earned, but to be honest it's a little hard to tell because of the way you have the cards broken across 3 columns. If it's possible to remove
{{div col|colwidth=30em}}
{{div col end}}
from the beginning & end of the card templates, it would be helpful for seeing what bingos you have! Joanna R (talk) 06:28, 7 June 2023 (UTC)
- I also noticed the column breaks aren’t showing up on my mobile (I was having trouble on desktop), so - maybe? - sorry for the false alert! Joanna R (talk) 06:47, 7 June 2023 (UTC)
Hi Rossi, thank you - and I also made sure to check the cards today on my mobile browser so I'd avoid the column formatting anyway, so it was doubly-easier! Congrats on your Beginner Blackout and Expert Bingo, this is a lovely pair of dark red and dark purple badges! Joanna R (talk) 21:28, 7 June 2023 (UTC)
Hoya Rossi, thank you so much for your contribution to Fanlore and congratulations on finishing this year Bingo! Here is a pair of shiny new badges for you 🍓 -- Aerlko (talk) 02:15, 9 June 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you! My completionist personality is very happy to have the full set. ;) Rossi (talk) 15:25, 9 June 2023 (UTC)
Removal of italic title template
Hello Rossi - I've noticed that you've been removing some of the italic title templates I put on category pages, citing the template being "broken". May I ask why you consider the template broken, or if you are confused by the functionality of the template? If you are removing the template due to the fact that the template is only italicizing part of the title on some pages, that is by design due to how the "string" parameter works. Pinky G Rocket (talk) 19:47, 26 July 2023 (UTC)
- It was because the template itself wasn't doing what it was supposed to and throwing up an error. I can undo if you prefer. Rossi (talk) 19:59, 26 July 2023 (UTC)
- Can you show me what error it was giving you? I can try and do some troubleshooting. Pinky G Rocket (talk) 20:01, 26 July 2023 (UTC)
- I've reverted the edit on Category:Avatar: The Last Airbender Zines - I think it's either because the italics don't work on category pages, or because there's a combo of italicised title (Avatar: The Last Airbender) and then "Zines", which is confusing things? The error message is "Pages using italic title with no matching string". Rossi (talk) 20:06, 26 July 2023 (UTC)
- My wiki editor shows me that there was extra whitespace or invisible characters (rendering as red boxes in the editor) in the argument for the parameter string when I added it. The argument for the parameter string cannot have extra whitespace or invisible characters at the beginning or end; otherwise, it can throw errors like the one you encountered, as the template looks for an exact match. That was my mistake; I'll go back to the pages you edited and re-add the template with the corrected argument. Pinky G Rocket (talk) 20:13, 26 July 2023 (UTC)

Osomatsu-san rollbacks
Rossi, I was rolling back hostile edits on various Osomatsu-san pages, and I think the restored page also put back the Country Girl (Osomatsu-san) link you'd added (when it was orphaned by the hostile edits), but anyway just giving you a heads up about this, and if I overlooked any info that should be added back into the Osomatsu-san page, please feel free to add it back! Questions about Categories
Hi Rossi, I just had a question. I see that you have been adding Art categories to a lot of older zine art images which is great, but I was wondering why you are removing the Zine categories when you are doing that? Like something can be a piece of Star Trek TOS Art and also from a Star Trek TOS Zine. -- Kingstoken (talk) 19:53, 16 September 2023 (UTC)
- I was thinking mostly of trying to declutter the zine categories. Quite often you have a couple of pages listing the zines by name, and then 10 pages of image files. I probably should have talked about it first - a bad habit of mine is to have an idea and act on it straight away. Sorry. Rossi (talk) 20:05, 16 September 2023 (UTC)
- Yeah, I understand the thinking, but it is probably best to maybe open it up for discussion on a talk page first so all editors can come to a consensus -- Kingstoken (talk) 20:17, 16 September 2023 (UTC)

Hey Rossi, I'm wondering why you keep taking Category:Marvel Art off of the Spider-Man fanart I've uploaded? Spider-Man and his friends are all are part of the Marvel Universes so the overarching category of Marvel Art applies. Like I'm fine with you adding other categories like MCU, but MCU art is under the umbrella of Marvel art, as well as any other Spider-Man adaptations -- Kingstoken (talk) 14:09, 20 September 2023 (UTC)
- It was an attempt to use Marvel Art category as more of a container category; for those smaller Marvel properties that didn't have (or need) a specific Art sub-category, I added the overall category to appear under "Marvel Art" rather than making a new sub-category specifically for art. For example, Category:Agent Carter doesn't have a separate Agent Carter Art category, but does have art posted. So I added it to Category:Marvel Art and it appears now with the other listed art sub-categories.
To me, it makes it easier to find all the links, including art, for a specific smaller Marvel property. For Spidey, however, it might be better to create Category:Spider-Man Art since there's a lot of art for that. Rossi (talk) 15:44, 21 September 2023 (UTC)
multimedia vs multifandom
Just a note to say that the Multimedia category is for fanworks in multiple media (text, audio, visual art, etc.) and not fanworks with multiple sources (multifandom). I created a category for Multifandom Wikis as that seemed to be the category you were looking for last month. There was some talk of renaming the multimedia category to be less confusing, but that doesn't seem to have gone anywhere.--aethel (talk) 16:52, 24 November 2023 (UTC)

Howdy Rossi again, thank you for creating (extra creating? ha - nice there was double the content ready to go) a page on a fanartist for Day 6, and all your edits throughout the week! Joanna R (talk) 23:58, 19 February 2024 (UTC)
FYI moving pages
I noticed that you copy/pasted the contents of Armageddon to create a new disambiguated page. Please don't do this! Pages need to be renamed instead or the edit history will be lost; for example, it now looks like you wrote the contents of Armageddon (film) yesterday, whereas it seems that Sparcicle wrote it in November. Lost page history can create problems down the line if there's ever a question about the contents of a page that could be answered by who wrote which part when.--aethel (talk) 13:41, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
- Oh, crap, I'm so sorry! No, I won't do that again, definitely! Rossi (talk) 19:57, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
use of the meta categories
Just FYI, "meta" subcategories are intended only for Fanlore pages that are documenting specific fanworks; general meta-related or discussion-topic pages don't belong. For example, all the general "Star Trek and [Topic]" pages would go in the Star Trek category (and the [Topic] category if there is one) rather than the Star Trek Meta category; Star Trek Fandom and Music isn't an essay posted on tumblr, but a general topic page compiled by Fanlore editors. A good rule of thumb is to put pages in a Meta by Topic subcategory if they use the meta essay template (or more rarely, the open letter or podcast ep or academic commentary template). Another example is websites or challenges related to meta: Reylo Meta Week, for example, shouldn't get the 2019 Meta category because it is a challenge that ran in 2019, not an essay that was written in 2019. Instead, it belongs in Category:Meta because the topic of the challenge was meta. If there are enough pages on challenges related to meta, someone could create Category:Meta Challenges and move it there instead. See also my comments from last year: Category_talk:Meta#where_did_all_the_meta_pages_go.3F--aethel (talk) 05:25, 12 May 2024 (UTC)
- Gotcha. A lot of that stuff was already in Star Trek Meta but I'll clean things up. I'm wondering if perhaps something like Category:Fan Memories would also be useful? There's a lot of articles with old-timers recalling their early days. Rossi (talk) 21:02, 12 May 2024 (UTC)
- Yeah, a new category for reminiscences could work. Like oral histories or personal narratives? There are a few pages for oral history projects, but no category, but a lot of what's documented on Fanlore was online text posts so not really "oral".--aethel (talk) 03:52, 14 May 2024 (UTC)
- Yeah, I think using "oral" will confuse things, since there's also fan interviews as a category. Plus the verbal/text difference. That's why I thought "Fan Memories" might work better, also to separate it from the "official" history projects. And Fan History Rossi (talk) 04:00, 14 May 2024 (UTC)

With Regards to Evolution Games and Role Play
I noticed that you added Category:Role Playing to Evolution Game. I understand that evolution games have a fair bit of overlap with roleplay activities such as art RPGs, but I think it would be more accurate to call it "gamified worldbuilding", as in the majority of evolution games, you aren't acting out a character at all (though some evo games' discord servers offer roleplay channels). I added the gamified worldbuilding descriptor to the opening paragraph; is there more clarity I should be adding regarding what an evolution game actually is? And would you still consider the category appropriate given this clarification? Disgustedorite (talk) 19:39, 16 August 2024 (UTC)
- It's kind of tricky, isn't it? From reading your (extremely detailed and informative!) description, the need for a game master makes me inclined to consider it roleplaying, where rather than an individual character, you're role playing the species/world that's being evolved. Then again, it just might be easier to create the Category:Evolution Gaming - I switched it out the other day because there was only one page linking to it, but if there are and going to be more, it would probably be justified. We can always check with the Fanlore Gardeners for advice! Rossi (talk) 19:51, 16 August 2024 (UTC)
- It's definitely not "role playing the species/world", unless we're gonna say all collaborative worldbuilding is roleplay too. It's akin to saying the Pokemon design team is roleplaying when they make new Pokemon. And the reason for only one game in the evolution game category was because I haven't made the pages for the innumerable examples yet. And they are not "evolution gaming" either--an individual evolution game such as Sagan 4 is not "gaming", it is "a game". Just as much as any video game is, it just happens to not be a video game. Disgustedorite (talk) 20:01, 16 August 2024 (UTC)
- Hey, I didn't mean any disrespect! I guess I phrased things badly. Let's go with creating the Category:Evolution Games category and settle things there. Rossi (talk) 20:39, 16 August 2024 (UTC)
- Alright. Also, I just made the List of Evolution Games, and as you can see, there's a very, very large number of them. If even a fraction of the pages get made, that category's gonna balloon in size... Disgustedorite (talk) 23:22, 16 August 2024 (UTC)

Question about webpage
Hey Rossi, I have a question about creating the fanwork page. I will probably add a lot of realities and new challenges is there any subpages that I could add to that main page or is there any way that I can make it more organized as there is endless possibities? I want to also thank you so much for all the help you have given me. Mandiorli (talk) 01:01, 19 September 2024 (UTC)
Thank you again, you have been extremely helpful and welcoming. Mandiorli (talk) 01:52, 19 September 2024 (UTC)
Thank you for working on the K/S art pages with me
I've kinda gone a little crazy this past week with these individual art pages -- tracking down comments and titles, and hooking them up to various things like con reports and more. It's one way I'm trying to distract myself from my extreme US election anxieties. This means I'm keeping a few too many balls in the air with this project, so I'm really, really happy to have you spotting me, Rossi. --Mrs. Potato Head 18:51, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
