Kitty Pryde/Pete Wisdom is the canon pairing of two Excalibur comics characters during the 1990s, Kitty Pryde and Pete Wisdom.
Fandom
The pairing became especially popular due to the work of Luba Kmetyk and her Fonts of Pryde and Wisdom archive, where she not only hosted her own fics, but a considerable collection of others. With the waning of comics fandom and the rise of the MCU, there are less fanworks now, but the ship still has its fans posting to AO3.
While comics character ages are... fluid, to say the least, it has been established in canon that Pete is at least ten years older than Kitty. While some fans use this as the basis of "experienced lover teaches young virgin the ways of love" type stories, others are less comfortable:
Still sorting out how I feel regarding Kitty Pryde and Pete Wisdom. One the one hand I like their dynamicOn the other...I don't know how old Kitty is at this time, which is kind of making me unsure. My best guess is she's 18 in 1995/96, but Warren Ellis is writing her more like a young-20s. Which is whatever, but Pete Wisdom is like...ten years older than her.
And like...age gap relationships happen but I kinda wish writers would stop giving her a thing for guys who are much older than her. I dunno, they don't last and this was almost 30 years ago so its kind of a non-issue, but its something I've been thinking about this whole run of Excalibur (and Pryde & Wisdom)
Addendum: Yall know what I mean by "age gap" right? Obviously not everyone is exactly the same age as their partner, but when the difference exceeds a couple years (e.g. ten) - that's what I mean here
The fact it was Warren Ellis who created Pete Wisdom and who first wrote the couple, and whose own unethical sexual behaviour has since been exposed, tends to increase the discomfort and is possibly another reason the ship's popularity has decreased since the 1990s-2000s.
Common Tropes in Fanworks
- Darkfic - stories exploring Pete's darker side and the unpleasant things he had to do with Black Air and Kitty's reactions to that.
- BDSM AU - particularly Luba's Idylls of the Cat series, which has both positive and negative portrayals as part of this relationship with Kitty.
- Casefic - per various crossovers, especially with The X-Files and Supernatural
- Age Difference - particularly with Kitty/Pete stories, as she was considered to be only eighteen when she met him.
- Shovel Talk - both in canon (where the entire eXcalibur team threatened Pete) and in fanon.
- Domestic AU - writers often enjoy the awkwardness that is Pete and Kitty trying to navigate a "normal" life. May or may not include babies.
