Help:Fandom Friendships Challenge
The Fandom Friendships Challenge will run on Fanlore from 11–24 November 2024, in collaboration with Fanhackers, another project of the OTW! During this period, you’re challenged to broaden your fannish horizons by completing six edits to a wide range of Fanlore article types, all in the theme of Fandom Friendship. In exchange for completing these edits, you’ll be awarded a set of badges for your user page, one for each edit you make.
This challenge is also in celebration of Fanhackers’ upcoming Fandom Friendships Zine, which is open for submissions until 30 November 2024. If your fandom friendships have shaped your experience as a fan, consider submitting to the zine, which accepts all types of submissions — personal essays, academic papers, art, comics, interviews, oral histories, and more, as long as it can fit on the printed page! The challenge
These editing tasks challenge you to broaden your fannish horizons and step out of your comfort zone by making edits to a wide range of Fanlore pages, all related to the theme of fandom friendship!
- Make an edit relating to a fandom you’re a part of
- Make an edit relating to a zine, zines or zine fandom
- Make an edit relating to fan communities or a specific fan community
- Make an edit related to meta or fan discussion, or a particular example of one
- Make an edit relating to exchanges, big bangs or other types of fandom challenges
You can make edits relating to examples in these areas or the topic as a whole — for example, for the fandom challenges prompt, you might choose to make an edit to the Big Bang article, write about a specific challenge like Yuletide, or add some examples of gift exchanges to a page about a particular fandom. Any edit to relevant pages is welcome, even if it’s just housekeeping edits like formatting, or adding some examples. Creating new pages relating to the theme also counts as an edit for this challenge.
If you need inspiration on the content you can add to Fanlore, Fanhackers has a number of resources, including a fandom studies bibliography hosted on Zotero, which can be sorted by tags. You can also check out their blog for more inspiration, such as their tags on gift economy or affective labour.
How to participate
To participate in the challenge, copy and paste the challenge tracker template onto your user page. Adding this to your user page will allow Fanlore volunteers to check for participation and award you badges.

Every time you complete a challenge, simply edit this template to add a link to your relevant edit after the equals sign. We also recommend you add “Fandom Friendship Challenge” to your edit summaries, to help us spot qualifying edits.
How to display badges
You’ll be awarded badges for your edits by a Fanlore volunteer, who will add the badges you’ve earned to your User Talk page with a message congratulating you.
You can display these by copying the file source from your User Talk page and pasting it into the source your user page, or by adding an image in the visual editor and searching the file name as it appears in the source code for your User Talk page. The source code should look something like this:
