In November 2008 acetamide (aka smokey2307) decided to host Merlin/Arthur Fanfic Awards in her Livejournal.[1] Nominations were open until December 5th, 2008, voting was possible throughout December and the results were announced on January 10th, 2009.[2] The rules were simple:
- You can nominate any fic, provided it contains the Merlin/Arthur pairing. Pre-slash is included in this.
- You can self-nominate fics and nominate more than one fic per category. In fact, nominate as many fics as you want - the more the merrier.
- I'll post little reminders in the comms as the nominations come to a close, and the same when we start voting, so that people late to the party can still get in on it and the post isn't lost.
- Here, an epic is determined at being over 10,000 words in total.[1]
The categories were a bit awkward and didn't really fit the fandom. Compared to other fandoms there were surprisingly few crossovers, almost no dark or deathfic, non-con was rare, the concept of chaptered fic seemed more suitable for FF.net, there were maybe two timetravel stories in the whole fandom and the M/A stories were usually so OTP-centric that it was difficult to find enough stories that featured another character in a major role to nominate something for some of the categories.
On the other hand, categories like first time, Arthur finds out, sex pollen, genderswitch, futurefic or reincarnation fic were suspiciously absent and the results should be taken with a grain of salt. However, several fan favorites did make the final cut and the winners, runner-ups and nominees hint at some of the stories that were popular at the time.
Shortly after the first round acetamide opened nominations for the Merlin/Arthur Spring 2009 MAFAs.[3] One of the reasons she mentioned was that the response to the first awards "was very satisfying, and it ended up being basically one big fandom-generated rec list."[3] Additional categories like "Finding-Out Fic" were added to this round of the awards. Acetamide put a lot of work into the awards and the results of the 2008 MAFAs are archived on the Camelot Awards website.
Nominations for the Spring 2010 MAFAs closed in February 2010[4] but the voting was canceled and the Merlin Slash Awards replaced the MAFAs.
