Meterology is a Merlin story by Fahye (Word count: ~4,600). Strictly speaking it is gen, but it mirrors the Merlin/Arthur subtext fans saw in the show and could just as well be considered pre-slash.

First line: "In retrospect, it had taken a surprisingly short time for Merlin to decide that Arthur Pendragon was not actually a complete prat."

Author's notes: "this show makes me want to squeal in a high-pitched manner and have caplocky conversations about DESTINY and, obviously, write fic. [...] Set...between 1x09 and 1x10, I suppose. It was meant to be a lot slashier, but instead it is just about as slashy as the show. Which is still pretty damn slashy, trust me."[1]

Posted two weeks before Fahye's Quickening Days, the story is one of those early fics that defined the fannish interpretation of the Merlin/Arthur relationship and appears on many recs lists.[2][3][4][5] Arthur is seen here through Merlin's eyes and what he sees is more than a prat, it's a man who works incredibly hard to fulfill the great expectations everyone has of him, who expects just the same of everyone around him, and who is a good man in need of a friend. The story is as much about Merlin being that friend as it is about him realizing that everything he was told about Arthur by the Great Dragon is true, because he can see it with his own eyes and he wouldn't have needed anyone to tell him.

Meterology won first place in the 'Best Merlin Characterisation' category of the Merlin/Arthur Fanfic Awards 2008.
