To Be Known is a Merlin/Arthur story by esohpe (~3,500 words). The author later deleted her journal and reposted the fic in her new LJ. The story was a runner-up in the categories 'Best Angst Fic' and 'Best Finding-Out Fic' at the Spring 2009 Merlin/Arthur Fanfic Awards.

Summary: So this is what it felt like to be normal. Merlin opens his eyes to the cool, shining metal of Arthur's unsheathed blade. "Sorcerer," Arthur spits.

An enchanted forest forces Merlin's magic out of him and leaves him helpless at Arthur's mercy. Arthur has to decide what to do with his sorcerer manservant. One of the early and influential reveal fics.

rhea314 podficced the story[1] and cybel turned it into an audiobook. The podfic is 19:14 min long and available at the Audiofic Archive in three different formats.[2]

Recs and Reviews

Another Arthur finds out story but god, so memorable. It's angsty and slightly painful in the best tradition of hurt/comfort.[3]

This story has been recced all over the place and with good reason, too. Who doesn't love a good reveal story? The ending gives me chills every time.[4]

A powerful fantasy story that will twist the blade in your gut. So this is what it felt like to be normal. Merlin opens his eyes to the cool, shining metal of Arthur's unsheathed blade. "Sorcerer," Arthur spits. I don't know if I love the beginning or the ending more.[5]
