Recurring Characters

Guest Characters

Various main and recurring characters from the other Arrowverse shows have appeared within Legends of Tomorrow - often as a guest or fairly recurring role. To name a few: Oliver Queen/Green Arrow, Laurel Lance/Black Canary, Quentin Lance, Felicity Smoak, Nyssa al Ghul, Ra's al Ghul, Talia al Ghul, Cisco Ramon, Caitlin Snow, Barry Allen/Flash, Kara Danvers/Supergirl, Wally West/Kid Flash and John Diggle/Spartan.

Various historical characters have appeared, including Julius Ceaser, George Lucas, King Arthur and Guinevere, J. R. R. Tolkien, and George Washington.

Fandom

Before the show aired, many speculated on how they were bringing Sara Lance back and on how the characters would interact with each other. However, it wasn't until the First Look/Trailer [1] was released that Tumblr exploded with gifs, picspams and some fans even started shipping characters already (see #Shipping section for information) which even led to some fanfics being created around those pairings. A few Tumblr blogs were created around the series, and even more were created after the series aired.

Vids are mainly posted to YouTube with only a few uploaded to Tumblr directly.

Fanfiction for the series is mainly located on Archive of Our Own and Tumblr, however FanFiction.net and Wattpad are also used although at a lesser context compared to the first two.

Beebo

Beebo was introduced in season 3 as part of the fictional "Cuddle Me Beebo" toy brand. The toy ended up as an anachronism, creating a time aberration of New Valhalla, where he was worshiped by the Vikings and replaced Christmas with "Beebo Day". Beebo quickly became popular within the fandom and had many editing him into history photos,[1] wishing each other a happy Beebo Day on December 25 and generally using the phrase "Praise Beebo" as a positive affirmation. On April 1, 2018 the Arrowverse Wiki changed to the "Beebo Wiki" for its April Fools joke and Legends of Tomorrow did an official Instagram Takeover with Beebo.[2]

Shipping

Since all of the characters (besides Rip Hunter) already appeared on Arrow and/or The Flash, many fans already shipped the LoT main characters with those characters, for example Leonard/Barry, Leonard/Mick, Ray/Oliver, Sara/Nyssa and Kendra/Cisco; interest in those pairings continued through the airing of LoT's first season. Carter/Kendra, had the comicverse canon background and star-crossed lovers/soulmates history, thus already had a following. Fanworks on AO3 often used the Legends of Tomorrow tag on the above ships since the First Look/Trailer was released.

The new ships with the First Look/Trailer release were: Kendra/Sara/Nyssa, Kendra/Sara, Ray/Kendra, Rip/Kendra, Kendra/Barry (at the time Kendra had yet to appear on The Flash), Sara/Leonard, Leonard/Ray, and Ray/Sara.[3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10]

Since the pilot episode first aired, the pairings Leonard/Ray and Leonard/Sara took off, as well as the threesome or brot3 of Leonard/Mick/Sara. A couple other ships also later surfaced: Mick/Jax, Mick/Sara, Sara/Jax, Jax/Betty, Martin/Sara, Mick/Martin, Jax/Kendra, Sara/Lindsay, and Mick/Ray. By the end of the first season Rip/Miranda, Carter/Kendra, Kendra/Ray, Sara/Lindsay, and Leonard/Sara were canonized.

Season 2 added Nate Heywood and Amaya Jiwe to the Legends team which brought several new ships, including Ray/Nate, Amaya/Sara, Mick/Amaya and Amaya/Nate. Rip/Gideon also surfaced thanks to the appearance of Gideon's human form.

After the mid-season finale of season 3, Sara/Ava became very popular. Amaya/Zari, Sara/Constantine, Ray/Nora, and Constantine/Gary also gained traction. The crossover event highlighted Sara/Alex and Leonard/Ray Terrill.

Criticism

Spoiler Warning: This article or section may contain spoilers. If this bothers you, proceed with caution.

Season 3

  • While not only contained to LoT, the crossover event "Crisis on Earth X" was criticized for being set on a Nazi Earth and having Nazi doppelgänger characters.

Connections with other Fandoms

The series makes many references to and have many similarities with Prison Break and Doctor Who.

Arthur Darvill played Rory Williams in Doctor Who, who played a human that traveled through time with the Doctor, in LoT he portrays Rip Hunter which is a character that can be described sort of like Captain Jack Harkness - a time traveler from the future. He's actually the third DW actor to appear in the Arrowverse - after Malcolm Merlyn (John Barrowman, portrayed Jack Harkness in both DW & Torchwood) and Dinah Lance (Alex Kingston, portrayed River Song in DW).

Dominic Purcell (Heat Wave) and Wentworth Miller (Captain Cold) are both originally from Prison Break, and Legends of Tomorrow often references it. Or some fans interconnect them. Victor Garber's previous role in Titanic was referenced in the series as was Brandon Routh's Superman Returns and Caity Lotz dancing ability (started her career as a professional dancer).

On December 25, 2015, Entertainment Weekly announced that Ali Liebert (actress known from starring roles in Bomb Girls, Harper's Island, and Lost Girl) will portray Lindsay Carlisle - a "intelligent lady who is the ideal picture of 1950s womanhood... she harbors a dark secret: she’s a lesbian" and a love interest to Sara Lance.[16] Many fans compare it to her Bomb Girls character Betty McRae who was also a lesbian and from a similar time.

Jewel Staite, actress known for her portrayal of Kaylee Frye on Firefly/Serenity & Dr. Jennifer Keller on Stargate Atlantis, appeared on the series as Rachel Turner - "a tech genius and roboticist in the future".
