Guinevere is the wife of King Arthur, the high queen of the realm, and one of the main characters in Arthurian Legend.
In Literature
She first appears as Guanhamara in Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia Regum Britanniae. In early texts, she sometimes leaves Arthur for his nephew Mordred. The first writer to portray her as being in love with Lancelot du Lac was Chrétien de Troyes in The Knight of the Cart. This was taken up by many later writers and their affair is one of the central features of the legends as we know them today.
In Cinema
- Guinevere is one of the main characters in the musical and movie versions of Camelot.
- Guinevere, AKA Gwen, is one to the main characters in BBC Merlin. She has a brief romance with Lancelot but marries King Arthur and stays faithful to him except when under a curse. After Arthur dies in battle, she rules alone as queen.
