HarryPotterFanfiction.com is a Harry Potter fanfiction archive.

The site is part of the Fanfictionworld.net network, which also includes The Dark Arts, a graphic design community; Pottersworld, a Harry Potter RPG; and FictionCentral, an original fiction archive.

As of August 2016, the archive contains nearly 85,000 stories by nearly 40,000 authors.

The forums were shut down in April 2016, the archive was shut down in ??? 2019. The site was then bought by Fanfiction Recommendations and the forums reopened in ?? 2019. Fanfiction Recommendations announced the site was shutting down again in June 2021 and that it was being imported to AO3 by Open Doors.[1]

History

2016 Forum Shutdown

An account of the shutdown by user WriteYourHeartOut in 2016 (private correspondence reproduced with permission):

I don't know how much you know, so I'm just gonna copy and paste the full story I've told a few people. (Although slight precursor even to this: on April 1st, when our March fundraiser for the site ended, after thanking those who donated, Jay followed it up with a pretty douchey line about how those who could donate but hadn't would basically regret thinking that way in a few months when the site went down. Most people just brushed it off as a shitty way to put things, but whatever, but a couple people ran with it and complained on twitter and then wrote an entire blog about it. Then there was a lot of back and forth, and basically by the end, Jay threatened to close the site down immediately. And within a few hours, there was an official post with an official date - April 7th - of the forums being taken offline. Alopex and Rose quickly asked Jay if they could create a new forum for people to go to, Jay said of course, and that's how HPFT came into being, with the full support of Jay. The next day, however, Jay changed his mind because a bunch of people I guess wrote in begging him to please not take the forums away, but because our future was still so rocky, HPFT was going to continue building, just in case, and Jay was behind this as well. Basically, the future of the forums was on very shaky ground, so HPFT was going to be a backup regardless. And then eventually that turned into Jay changing his mind about HPFT, acting like he never said anything about the site shutting down, or about supporting a new forums, and posted a topic publicly called "Rumours" where he backpedaled about everything. In the Staff Zone, he then started telling the staff that they needed to choose between HPFF and HPFT. Everyone but three staff members chose HPFT. And as each member stepped down, Jay belittled and bullied them and said things like how useless they were and how he was glad to see them go, etc. And that should be enough of a setup for the rest of it):

You know how Jay has been treating the staff (and everyone, really, but mainly the staff) terribly since April 1st? He wanted to close the site, and had an announcement posted that the forums would be gone April 7, and told the Staff that they could set up a new forum elsewhere so we had someplace to go. Then he changed his mind about closing, because members wrote in begging him not to. That eventually escalated into him lying and backpedaling, posting that Rumours topic where he denied ever saying things were closing or that the staff could make an alternate website. Then every staff member but three stepped down, and he insulted them as they left with the shittiest, pettiest words of dismissal. And it was just... horribly abusive and hurtful and wrong. And then yesterday, the member lllb - who had stepped down from staff very recently - posted a status letting people know how they could contact her (because I think Jay cut off all the former-staff's PMs), and... gimme a sec and I'll grab the exact snapshots. Okay, in order (statuses on the right):

After that, I posted a status that said something like "Please make sure you're following lllb's status. Stay informed about who Jay really is." I wanted to make sure that members who aren't on twitter, who probably have no idea about the horrible things Jay is doing to the staff members, would see what he's been like consistently for the past two months.


Then, after he brought his shit out more publicly, I had an idea. As a former staff member, I had access to all of the past staff alters, so long as I still had their passwords. Newt Scamander, at the time, was the only staff alter who still had mod powers. So I decided to sign in as Newt, sneak into the Staff Zone, and take screenshots of every incriminating, douchey thing Jay's said over the last two months.


Originally, that was the only plan. But when I finished taking screenshots, I felt like... this needs to be shared. And it needs to be shared here, on the forums, so - again - the people not on twitter would see and be in the know. So... remember that Rumours post? Well... as Newt, I went in and edited almost the entire thing. And... let me find the screenshots for those, too. Gimme a minute.

Kaitlin (TreacleTart) wrote a status on the forums and a tweet with a link to it after I finished editing, and people flocked to it fast. It stayed up for probably less than ten minutes, but it made a huge impact. Someone else snuck onto the HPFF twitter account and posted snapshots of that post there (for when it was inevitably deleted - again, less than ten minutes). And then once Jay returned, maybe twenty minutes after the post, the forums were taken down and the Offline message you see there now went up. So... yeah. That's what happened. I shut down the forums. Which was not the goal, for the record. I just wanted the truth to be known, I wanted a mirror put to Jay's face so that he could not run away from his bullshit any longer, and I wanted a damn apology for his mistreatment. Obviously not what happened, but it was the goal, at least. However, I knew the risk going into it, am not surprised by the forums closure, and expect a full banning/deletion from archives and forums. But it was worth it. The truth needed to be seen, in my opinion. And I was just done allowing so many people I care about get mistreated and hurt. Members not on twitter deserved to know the reason there are only three staff remaining now.

Import to Archive of Our Own

In December 2021, it was announced that HarryPotterFanfiction.com would be moving to the Archive of Our Own as an Open Doors Project.[2]
