Ron/Luna is a pairing in the Harry Potter fandom of Ron Weasley and Luna Lovegood. It is sometimes called Red Moon, the name given to the 'ship on the FictionAlley message boards.
History
The Ron/Luna ship was given the name "H.M.S. Red Moon" on FictionAlley Park in 2003, shortly after the release of Order of the Phoenix. In 2005, the hms_redmoon LiveJournal was created, and the Keeper of Dreams fansite was established. The site was created as a R/L version of Symbolic Flight, a Harry/Hermione shipping site, "by a group of Shippers who felt that Red Moon [was] getting a bad rap in the Shipping Wars,"[2], as it was often viewed as a "dump ship" for Harry/Hermione shippers trying to pair off Ron.[3]
The Harry/Hermione and Draco/Ginny archive Portkey.org began to accept Ron/Luna fanworks shortly after the publication of Order of the Pheonix.
On LiveJournal, ronluna was the most active and popular R/L community until its deletion around 2007. After its deletion, ronxluna was created, but never reached much popularity. ron_luna was another community that was deleted sometime after 2005.
Appeal
Many fans who started shipping Ron and Luna after Luna's introduction in Order of the Phoenix already shipped Harry/Hermione (and often Draco/Ginny). The pairing was initially received with some hostility by proponents of opposing ships (such as Ron/Hermione), and seen as an excuse to pair off Ron to free Hermione for Harry. However, it was seen by others as a likable and practical addition to their existing ships, and many enjoyed Ron/Luna in its own right. Fans of the Ron/Luna, Harry/Hermione, and Neville/Ginny pairings sometimes called the combination "S.S. Dumbledore's Army" or "A Different Happy Weasley Family."
Many fans were attracted to the pairing because of the interest Luna shows in Ron when they first meet in Order of the Pheonix and Luna's statement that she "wouldn't have minded" going with Ron to the Yule Ball, which many perceived as an indication of a crush.
