Neville/Luna is a pairing in the Harry Potter fandom involving Neville Longbottom and Luna Lovegood.

Ship History

After Luna was first introduced in Order of the Phoenix in June 2003, some fans immediately interpreted the Neville/Luna ship as an "inevitable" accompaniment to endgame Ron/Hermione and Harry/Ginny.[1] The first Neville/Luna thread at FictionAlley Park's SCUSA forum was started by TromboneBorges only two days after OotP's publication.[2] The SCUSA ship was coined "SS The Government Stole My Toad".

Canonicity

Before the release of Half-Blood Prince, J. K. Rowling posted in the "Rumours" section of her official site in response to "Luna and Neville will hook up in HP&THBP":

"The Luna/Neville shippers are much less vehement and scary than the Harry/Hermione, Ron/Hermione tribes, so I hope I won’t receive too much hate mail for quashing this rumour. I see Neville and Luna as very different kinds of people and while they share a certain isolation within Hogwarts, I don’t think that’s enough to foster true love - friendship, perhaps, although I think that Neville would always find Luna’s wilder flights of fancy alarming."[3]

However, in the interviews following the release of Deathly Hallows, Rowling expressed somewhat of a change of heart. One article covering the interviews states:

It’s possible Luna has also found love with another member of the D.A.

When she was first asked about the possibility of Luna hooking up with Neville Longbottom several years ago, Rowling’s response was “Definitely not.” But as time passed and she watched her characters mature, Rowling started to “feel a bit of a pull” between the unlikely pair.

Ultimately, Rowling left the question of their relationship open at the end of the book because doing otherwise “felt too neat.”[4]

In subsequent interviews, Rowling says that Luna ends up marrying Rolf Scamander and that Neville marries Hannah Abbott, which has become the accepted canon.

In the Harry Potter films, however, Neville declares that he is "mad for" Luna.[5] Some fans distinguish "film canon" from "book canon" (so Neville/Luna would be canon in the former and not the latter), while others consider the film to be consistent with Rowling's statements and believe that Neville and Luna dated after Hogwarts but eventually moved on to end up with other people.
