Leo Fitz is an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. in the TV series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and specializes in engineering (especially weapons technology) for Phil Coulson's team.

Canon

Scottish by birth, Fitz attended S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy with Jemma Simmons, whom he also went on to work with on Coulson's team.

The season 1 finale leaves Fitz damaged, this is due to being trapped underwater and giving Simmons his air to get to the surface. She brings him along, but due to the lack of oxygen, it affects him. Season 2's premiere, it's revealed that he can't remember words and stumbles through sentences. Fitz appears to get better with help from his teammates and slowly resumes his duties within Shield. When Jemma is consumed by an alien monolith, Fitz spends months searching for a way to save her. He was part of the team that went through the portal to the alien planet Maveth to rescue her. Fitz and Simmons begin a romantic relationship on their return to Earth.

In season 4, Fitz works to create AIDA, a life model decoy. He is later trapped in a virtual reality world created by AIDA. In The Framework, Fitz has no memory of his former life and is a ruthless Hydra leader, known as The Doctor. Shortly after defeating AIDA, Fitz's team was abducted and traveled through time to an apocalyptic future. Fitz went into suspended animation to ensure he was reunited with the team, rescuing Jemma and Daisy from the Kree. Upon returning to the present, Fitz and Simmons got married. In the season finale, the agents succeeded in changing the future but Fitz died in the process. The team, realizing that a younger Fitz was still alive, in suspended animation, planned to rescue him.

Fandom

Leo Fitz is a popular AOS character.

Shipping

The dominant pairing in this fandom is Fitz/Jemma Simmons. At the end of season 1, FitzSimmons was the second most popular ship in the fandom. [1] By the start of season 3, FitzSimmons had overtaken Skyeward to become the most popular ship in this fandom and it has only grown in popularity since then.

At the end of season 1, Fitz/Grant Ward was the most popular slash pairing including Fitz, with the gen pairing of these two also common. Ward's eventual reveal of betrayal is denied by Fitz initially, however, Ward leaves him for dead destroying Fitz's hope that it was all an act. After the finale, works in this pairing and the poly pairing Fitz/Simmons/Ward, became less common.

Fitz/Skye is a rarer pairing. Fitz becomes very close to Skye during the first half of the first season. Fitz and Skye remain loyal friends, with Fitz hiding Skye's powers from the team after she undergoes terrigenesis.

In season two the slash pairing of Fitz/Mack (shipping Leo Fitz with the newly introduced Alphonso Mackenzie) gained some notable popularity. Fitz was recovering from a brain injury and isolated from the others in season two. However, Alphonso Mackenzie, slowly befriends Fitz and gets him to come out of his shell. By the end of season 5, this was the most popular slash pairing for Fitz.

A smaller slash ship arising from season 2 is Fitz/Hunter but the gen pairing of these two teammates is often more popular.

The gen relationships between Fitz & Simmons and Fitz & Skye are quite popular in the fandom.

Common Tropes & Storylines

  • Pre-canon works are often set during his time at the Academy with Simmons. Other works examine his pre-canon relationships with his family, particularly his abusive father and his encouraging mother. These fics can be entirely set in pre-canon, or be present day works with flashbacks to his childhood.
  • Recovery - In season 2, Fitz dealt with the physical results of suffering a brain injury. His difficult road to recovery and his lasting PTSD are often examined in more detail in fanworks. Hurt Comfort works featuring Fitz focus almost exclusively on comfort, as Fitz experiences considerable trauma in canon.
  • Neurodivergent Fitz - Many fans headcanon that Fitz may be autistic, and later a brain injury resulted in canon neurodivergency.
  • Framework Fitz works are often set in the Framework AU where Fitz is a villainous leader in Hydra. Following 5x14, many works deal with the aftermath of Framework Fitz's manifestation as a part of Leo's personality.

Bisexual Fitz

While some fans cultivated a headcanon that Fitz was bisexual while season 1 was still airing[2], but many saw it as a possible character development/reveal after episode 2x05 A Hen in the Wolf House aired[3][4][5][6]. While Fitz has been hallucinating Jemma Simmons since the beginning of season 2, he acknowledged that she was part of his subconscious for the first time in that episode (2x05), after her rather flattering comments directed at Mac's physique. Fitz commented that he couldn't argue with her since she was technically his subconscious[7]. Some fans (especially those already shipping Fitz/Mack) took that short conversation as proof that Fitz was canonically bisexual.
