California Crew is a vidding group with members based in Southern California (hence their name).
Members of the California Crew included: Elaine Gustanis, Gina Martin, Maura Kelly and many others. The vidding group was a loose agglomeration of fans -- there have been approximately 30 members over the years, and they didn't all work on every video, just on the group multi-media video that they submitted to MediaWest each year (ex: "Eat It" and "Spies Like Us" were examples of these group vids from the late 1980s). Because many members lived in Southern California, the California-Crew's video credits were often played over "We Love L.A." and took up the entire song (ex: in 1994 after the Northridge earthquake, the group's credits were backed by earthquake footage).
The vidding collective was extremely prolific and at MediaWest conventions in the 1990s, their vids would often play for over ten hours a day in the video room. Their vids were popular at MediaWest, won many awards, and were well known for creative opening credits to their songvid tapes, somewhat a rarity at the time given the technical difficulties of the VCR vid age.
The group is also protective of their vids and somewhat reluctant of letting copies widely circulate. In 1991, a well-meaning fan showed their "Oh Boy" and "You Can Call Me Al" Quantum Leap vids to a Creation Con staffer, who had them re-made for the professionally run conventions (such as Leap Con) without California Crew's knowledge or consent. Fans used a camcorder to record the March 1, 1992 LeapCon performance remarking that "California Crew did it better."[1] According to fans who have seen these versions of the vids, Creation Con did a worse job, adding insult to injury. Because of this, California Crew began to strictly control distribution of their vids, with most fans only getting to see them when the vids were shown at MediaWest. [2]
After some years of hiatus, they sent vids to the 2011 MediaWest vid contest.
Some 1992 Comments
From Textual Poachers:
While the fans are driven toward higher standards of technical perfection, a more sophisticated understanding of the form's potentials and a greater mastery over their equipment, many express concern that notions of professionalism may discourage new fans from trying their hands. As one member of California Crew explained at [a] MediaWest workshop, "We really want other people to do videos. We don't want to intimidate people. It took us eight years to get where we are today. You aren't going to start out looking like California Crew. Don't be disappointed if you aren't blown away by your first one.... You learn from your mistakes." These artists are anxious that fan music videos remain a communal artform that originates within and speaks to the particular interests of fandom rather than a means of showcasing the talents of a small number of skilled craftspeople who have mastered the form and invested in sophisticated technology.
Influential Works and Activities
Note: individual vidder names are not available for many of the vids listed below.
- Pressure - a semi-documentary vid that shows the creation of a single vid over a weekend, using 2 VCRs and a stop watch.
- Oh Boy - early example of live action lip synching
- Centerfield (multi-media), from the Constructed Reality show. It's a multi-fandom softball game, with all the fandoms sorted out into two teams - and it works. Fantastic example of just how much construction was possible in a VCR vid. Date: 1992, often found on the California Crew 1992 videotape
- I'll Think of a Reason Later" - Star Trek: Voyager - funny country music vid, often considered as the anti-7 of 9 vid. Date: 1999
- "Romeo" (Multiple fandoms) as sung by Dolly Parton, Emilylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt, a funny garbage can vid with one of the funniest cutaways to Blackadder and Baldrick.
- "Into the Fire" - Fandoms: North & South, Covington Cross and Empire among others.
- "You're in the Army" - a Riptide vid, one of the few.
- "One Night in Bangkok" which tells a "created" story,
- "Spies Like Us," - a multi-media vid that mixed spy footage such as Scarlet Pimpernel, Callahan, Man From Uncle and others.
- "Rebel Son" - a Star Wars vid
- "The Twilight Zone theme set to X-Files
- "Those Were The Days," a MUNCLE vid by Gina Martin. Beautiful transitions between Old MUNCLE and the Return movie, using the couple of old-series photos/props from the movie, or very similarly posed scenes. As one fan commented: "the person who made this vid really knows the series, to find those exact moments from more than 100 hours of tape. It is one of the vids where the more you know the series, the more you appreciate this video....[the vid is] a vid for true fans of the show - if you know what's going on in the clips, the song fits so well it could have been written to fit the video. For the "present" parts of the song, the clips are from the "Return" movie -- when the song shifts to reminisences of the past, Gina used the 2-3 subtle images of the past in the "Return" movie to link to the series, usually to a very similar scene in the '60s -- one in particular goes from the ending scene of Return, where Napoleon and Illya are in a bar, Illya on the left, raising a glass to each other, to a scene blocked EXACTLY the same way from the series."[3]
- ""The Boy From New York City," a MUNCLE vid by Gina Martin contains B&W first season clips of Napoleon. Date: 1994.
- Hungarian Rhapsody, is a VCR gen multiple fandoms vid
Infinite Combinations?
In order to be labeled a "California Crew" vid, the vids had to (a) include a scene from a TV show that featured a prolific stunt actor who appeared in many TV shows in the 1980s and 1990s and (b) include a core group of vidders.[4] However, vidders would edit in pairs (or even on their own) and came up with fanciful, often changing names from year to year.

Master List of Vids
The contents of each tape "collection" sometimes varied tape by tape or even year by year. In addition, California Crew provided no playlists with their songtapes, making it difficult to track down and identify the songs, vidders and in some cases the fandoms.
The table below contains information pulled from multiple sources. One series of songtapes were acquired by Christina P. in the 1990s. The dates below are based on her estimates. Additional information was pulled from the Vividcon and Stacy Doyle California Crew collections. Most of the playlists were handwritten with scribbled notes in the margins and the authors guessing at song titles and fandoms: corrections are welcomed. In addition, the majority of vids are listed as having been edited by "California Crew" - but it is clear that many were individual efforts. Only in later years would the tapes contain title cards identifying the vidders by name.
