Anna Marie is the alter ego of Rogue from the Marvel Comics series The X-Men. She generally appears as a main character in all the X-Men universes such as Marvel Comics: Earth-616, X-Men: The Animated Series, X-Men: Evolution, Wolverine and the X-Men, and X-Men Movieverse.

Part of the reason that I love Rogue so very, very much is that she's a dynamic character in the X-verses. She's ever-changing, always growing. She's practically a poster-girl for character development, but some things --important, fallible, human things-- are constants in her psychology.

Canon

Rogue first appeared in Avengers Annual #10 (November 1981). She possesses the mutant ability to absorb the psyche and abilities of another human being through skin contact. For nearly 20 years in the comics Rogue had no birth name, and was simply known as Rogue, until her given name of Anne Marie was reveled in 2004.

Rogue has appeared in four X-Men animated shows: X-Men: The Animated Series, X-Men: Evolution, Wolverine and the X-Men, and Marvel Anime X-Men. She was a main character in all except for Marvel Anime X-Men, where she had a brief cameo in the final episode.

Rogue is portrayed by Anna Paquin in the X-Men Movieverse.

Common Tropes in Fanworks

  • Dialogue: a common practice in writing fanfiction about Rogue or in her POV is to write in her Southern accent, such as spelling her Is as "Ah" and etc. The word "sugah" is a popular canon phrase of Rogue's. The consistency of the writing of her Southern accent in a certain fanfic is one of the things readers pay attention to.
  • Mutant Powers: the most popular storylines in Rogue related fanfiction is her learning or finding a way to control her mutant ability (since it's generally portrayed in canon as uncontrollable) and dealing with the physical, emotional and mental strain her powers put her through (the memories/histories/powers of the ones she touch for example as well as her dealing with some sort of touch starvation). Fan, vikingprincess, described it thusly Various canon and fan fiction writers treat this tremendous handicap differently; for example, sometimes those echoes fade away. Much more frequently, they do not, and Rogue's mindspace can begin to resemble a screaming, shouting, protesting crowd
  • Mundane AU: she does not have mutant powers, and meets other characters under more conventional circumstances. A variant of this, is Still Have Powers, usually where mutants are common and accepted, and live ordinary lives.
  • High School AU or College AU: common perhaps because of Rogue's young age in some adaptations
  • One of the most common mistakes in fanworks, especially in fanfiction, is the misspelling of Rogue's name as "Rouge".

Pairings

X-Men: Evolution

Rogue was one of the more popular characters in the X-Men: Evolution fandom with many fanworks and fansites created for her. This sometimes caused tensions between fans and anti-fans often leading to Ship Wars - mainly between Rogue/Scott and Scott/Jean fans, but sometimes other ships also.

  • Jus Ad Bellum by Jenn (seperis), One Rogue. Two timelines. Three personalities. Every possibility. Rogue discovers who she is, could have been, and everything she can become
  • Workin' So Hard byr_lee, Even at the best of times, absorbing someone else's psyche isn't easy. It isn't pleasant. It isn't fun. When it happens at the worst of times... well, what's a girl to expect?

X-Men: Evolution

  • Misunderstood by NeoVenus22, Rogue's out of the infirmary, and seeks the company of her friends.
  • Untouchable by Kount_Xero, A short time after the battle with Apocalypse, Rogue is having trouble adjusting to life. Her fear of touching, coupled with strange dreams about Cyclops, is driving her up the wall. What she doesn't know is that she isn't going towards a wall, but towards a secret kept beyond it.

X-Men Movieverse

  • Mixed Feelings by Andraste, Marie rifled through the cupboard with growing frustration. Bad enough that she had to cope with cravings for almost-raw steak at three in the morning, now she couldn't even find what *she* wanted ...
  • Girl (Bluebell Remix) by Eustacia Vye (eustaciavye), She liked to think she was in control.
