Brett Mahoney is a character from the Marvel Comics universe. Brett has also recently appeared in the Daredevil TV series, which is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Canon
Brett Mahoney first appeared in the comics Marvel Comics Presents Vol 2 #1 (November 2007). He was a detective in the 27th precinct of the NYCPD and partnered with Stacy Dolan. \
MCU
Brett was born and raised in Hell's Kitchen. He had a strong friendship and rivalry with Foggy Nelson. He's an officer of the New York City Police Department. He gives Nelson & Murdock a tip that turns into their first case; defending Karen Page. Brett helped bring down Wilson Fisk.
Brett briefly encountered Jessica Jones, when she tried to confess to the murder of her neighbour. He and his fellow officers were mind controlled by Kilgrave, and Brett aimed a gun at his superior, Detective Clemons. Both Jessica and Kilgrave left the police station without any further incident.
After arresting The Punisher, Brett was promoted to Detective Sergeant. In this role he investigated the activities of the Hand, at great personal risk to himself and his family. Months later when investigating an attack on a Senator, Brett again encounters Karen Page, but this time he fails to capture Frank Castle (The Punisher).

Most of the fandom around Brett is focused on his MCU appearance. Brett is often a side character in fics. Similar to the role he plays in canon, Brett is often investigating a vigilante, usually Daredevil, or he is investigating the same criminal that Daredevil, or another vigilante, is targeting.
In some fics, Brett is often suspicious of his friends tendency to turn up at so many crime scenes, often in cases related to Daredevil. He may also become suspicious of Matt Murdock. In fics where Brett is a main character, secret identity reveals are common.
