The first appearance of the Commandos was in 1963, as a World War II special unit led by Nick Fury. There have been multiple configurations of the group in different series, although Nick Fury and Dum Dum Dugan are often among the characters.

In the MCU, the Howling Commandos' comics origin story was combined with that of Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes in Captain America: The First Avenger. Here, Steve recruits men from among the soldiers that he rescues from imprisonment and torture by The Red Skull and Arnim Zola to form an elite strike force to combat Hydra. Although these characters' roles are secondary, they are vividly written and well-portrayed in the film. That and the fact that the Commandos are a multiracial, multinational group has made them objects of fannish interest and has led to their inclusion in fan works, often as part of Steve/Bucky stories.
