The War Was in Color is a Steve Rogers vid by Settiai. It is a companion to Carry On, a Steve vid by the same vidder that premiered at Vividcon in 2012.

Summary: "Sit down, son. Let me fill you in." Or, alternatively: STEVE *REALLY* FEEEEELS! (As do we.)

Recs and Reviews

This vid, to a gorgeous song, pulls the viewer into the emotional reality of Steve's incredible life as a man of two times. It really is ALL the Feels.[1]

I'm physically wound up in the gut; that was beautiful. Steve is my perennial favourite, and this encapsulates all I love - his huge tragedy, and the way he pushes on; he's lost so much, but he's still hopeful, and can't help finding new people to care about even while he's burnt up with loss. Great use of colour, of course, and I loved the shots of Peggy's photo, then Peggy in motion, and the way you overlaid Peggy and the SHIELD agent from the end of Cap.[2]

Settiai's "The War Was in Color" is possibly one of the best music videos I've ever seen. The lyrics fit so perfectly at times that I almost would have thought the song was made for the movie, even though I know full well Carbon Leaf released that song a few years ago. If you love Captain America, watch this music vid. If you want some Avengers team feels, watch this. If you just like watching vids that are extremely well made, watch this. You won't regret it.[3]

I love so many things about it, but I particularly want to mention how awesome it is to see so much of the Howling Commandos and everything they and Steve did in the 40s. I can never get enough of those guys. Also, you did a fantastic job with the choruses--every time the line about "these black and white photos" comes up is so poignant, and the switching between eras as the vid goes on is really cool.[4]

That was genuinely fantastic. A really great song choice, with distinctive movements -- I really liked transition into the action-y middle eight with the hell/red lyric, and then that return to WWII at the end -- and then a lovely sense of Steve being (sort of) reconciled to his future and THE future. But only sort of. Excellent. It made me want to rewatch the films and then the vid immediately.[5]

One of my favourite things in the whole wide world is fanvids. Way back in the late 80s, some guy shows up to our Blake's Seven party with a VHS tape full of B7 themed music videos, and ever since I've been a fan of this particular art form. (It was harder back then, when you had to splice your vids together from actual tape, so there weren't nearly as many of them circulating around as there are today.)

There's more to it than just putting a song to scenes from your favourite TV show or movie. Syncing up the song to the images, placing the cuts with the musicality in mind, is an art unto itself, and the very best fan vids are ones where you could honestly believe, just for a moment, that the video was shot for the song.

All of this is prelude to the video linked below, which my wife shared with me a few minutes ago, and which may be the best fanvid I've ever seen, period.[6]

I must have watched this at least 20 times and it never fails to reach me and stun me in my seat. I love how it tells the story of the song and of the movie(s) at the same time, how the tone matches so flawlessly, and how it not only gives you the singer and Steve's feelings, but calls up your own.

But the most important thing, and the thing that led me to comment, is: I will possibly never be as grateful for anything in a fanwork as I am for you showing Natasha on the line "victory earned". It moves me to tears pretty much every time, that you chose that moment for that line.

Thank you so much for this amazing piece of art.[7]

Steve's visual reminiscence about WWII and Carbon Leaf's lyrics do a great job of giving you the feels. "If red is for Hell, the War was in color." So many ouchy and protective feels! This is the fanvid that made me want to learn vidding.[8]
