Reactions/Reviews
Amazing and creepy and OW. A brilliant vid about bringing out the subtext - but not the subtext fandom usually wants to talk about.Ao3 bookmark by kiezh, March 9, 2014[1]
One of the best vids to come out of Marvel Cinematic Universe. In fact, probably in my top 10 vids of all time. The editing is amazing, and it makes a powerful ideological argument persuasively, intimately, quietly, personally.Ao3 bookmark by cadenzamuse, March 18, 2014[2]
Oh, I really enjoyed this -- the song choice was absolutely perfect, and I think I will have to check out more of the artist's work now for sure (I like folk a lot but have somehow never actually gotten around to Tracy Grammer). I think my favorite part was the propaganda verse, intercutting Steve's wartime performances and Tony's, well, consummate showmanship, and the blooded trading cards. Wow.Ao3 Comment by Sineala, May 4, 2014[3]
Hot damn. Best critique of the MCU, hands down.Ao3 bookmark by Esmenet, May 9, 2014.[4]
This is really great and made me just the right amount of uncomfortable. I loved every shot that you chose to use for the last rendition of the chorus, particularly 2:40 - 2:50 (How chilling can you make a kid's drawing of his hero? Very, apparently.)Ao3 Comment by strix_alba, June 21, 2015[5]
Horrifying and brilliant - the war machine in action.Ao3 bookmark by keerawa, April 11, 2016.[6]
Always one of my favorite MCU vids. It just captures all of the glorious harmful patriotic jingoism that pervades all of the punchy punchy heroics. Thanks so much for it.Ao3 comment by selfindulgentbitch, February 5, 2019[7]
And here's a vid about the military-industrial complex in the MCU, and what happens to it when you add supersoldiers and superheroes. It's about propaganda and violence and "solutions" and who benefits and who doesn't from the narrative that supports them. The song choice is perfect, and the editing is great.[8]
This is an incredibly well-crafted vid. The choice of clips is inspired, the lyric-matching is impeccable, the storytelling, the song editing, the transitions, everything. It also pulls no punches at all in its critique of the MCU while using such a wide range of sources that you know this isn’t a shallow reading. [9]
