Edelgard/Monica is a yuri pairing in the Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes fandom.
Canon
Edelgard and Monica are old friends who knew each other pre-game, and were implied to be quite close.
Three Houses
In Three Houses, Monica is rescued along with Flayn after both are kidnapped by Solon of Those Who Slither in the Dark. She immediately attaches herself to Edelgard, arousing suspicion among others. Before her rescue, it was assumed Monica ran away shortly before her graduation the previous year.
It's later revealed that Monica is actually Kronya, another of Those Who Slither who killed Monica long ago and used her body as a disguise to infiltrate Garreg Mach.
Three Hopes
The first proper mission of the prologue has whichever class the player chose rescuing Monica from a bandits' stronghold, where Those Who Slither were keeping her. She reveals the one who kidnapped her was Tomas, the monastery's librarian, who is actually Solon in disguise. This saves Monica's life and leads Edelgard to jettison Those Who Slither from the empire before taking the throne.
Two years later, Monica remains by Edelgard's side as she declares war on the Central Church. If the player chose the Black Eagles, Edelgard and Monica have a support set where she reveals her romantic feelings for Edelgard. While Edelgard's feelings are more ambiguous, she does not reject Monica.
The two also have unique dialogue during training, shared meals, and chores.
Fandom
Monica was fairly well-received when Three Hopes first came out, but quickly became a divisive character. While she was loved by yuri fans who adored her interactions with Edelgard and other female characters and appreciated by fans who loved seeing a canon lesbian in a Fire Emblem game, others found her obsessive devotion to Edelgard offputting. [2] [3] This is especially true of some Edelgard/Hubert shippers, who not only dislike Monica for expressing her feelings too loudly for their liking, but see her canon love for Edelgard as a threat to their ship. [4]
Some shippers of the pairing prefer to view it through an unhealthy lens due to their B support, in which Edelgard tells Monica she only saved her because it was convenient. [5] They take this to mean Edelgard is still only thinking in terms of her goals, and believe Monica's behavior itself is unhealthy and messed up. Other fans simply dislike Edelgard, and by extension Monica for directing so much of her devotion to their most hated character. [6]
The pairing is Monica's most popular ship, but a rarer pair for Edelgard.
