Ephraim was a very popular and well-liked character from the beginning, even becoming the fandom's memetic badass in the 2010s. People praised his military prowess, his tactical skills, and his viability as a unit. Some fans even claimed he was the true protagonist of the series compared to his less experienced and naive twin sister.
Naturally, this would lead to backlash among people who felt his most vocal fandom ignored the complexity of his character. These fans would point out that Ephraim being so focused on his fighting prowess was a double-edged sword, and that his route in the game brought several of his own flaws to light and showed that he was no less naive than Eirika; the difference was that while she had a lot to learn of war, he had much to learn emotionally (mainly through his interactions with the Demon King-possessed Lyon).
